I am currently working on a project with a contractor and I swear he says the word 'Basically' about 5 times in EVERY sentence. To say I might just 'basically' punch him if he continues is an under-statemen but I wouldn't mind so much if he actually used the word correctly. He actually over complicates things so nothing is 'basically' described at all.

I realised then that loads of people do this, overuse and misuse this word. They use it all the time and then don't actually go into the 'basics' of something, therefore defeating the purpose of the word 'basic'ally. Often it is like this contractor....quite the opposite of basic.

I'm sure there are loads more OVER used and MISused words out there but couldn't think of any just now,

So I put this to you guys....what word or words that people use do you feel is either overused, misused or even just words people use that bug you?

Oh yeah Chris...'Like' is another one over used here. Especially in the county where I live. I am originally from Dublin but moved an hours drive away to Wicklow. No disrespect to the lovely Wicklow people but they do have one of the most annoying accents and shove the word 'like' into as many conversations as possible.

Phil, we use the phrase 'How's it hangin' more loosely but it isn't as commonly said nowadays. But I do laugh at the stereotypical Ozzie phrase 'Aw Yeah' in a real strong Ozzie accent and 'Struth'. Something tells me no-one actually says 'Struth' just like the Irish don't say 'Be God and Be Gor' like everyone thinks.

Funny aren't they...stereotypes.

Let's include stereotypes as well...why not?

Oh yeah that's another phrase that's used way too much - 'To be honest'
Are people really being honest when they use that phrase?

Eh I suppose the letter thing could work but he won't be there much longer so I think I can put up with it for now.

perhaps the more people use "to be honest" as a phrase it will become a phrase that is totally false, and the poeple saying it are actually trying to cover the next lie.

"Im over the moon".............is that actually possible?
"To be honest" i think its a lie lol

i know in high school everyone said "Ya dude" as in "ya dude, that's smm-o-kin" or ya dude, burn one

well mostly it was the stoners and there were alot of them

i can't stand it when people say "like" all the time, well i guess i really started hating it when my sister in law stayed with us a while and everything was

"like, like like-idy like like like, ya know what i mean? you dont understand, like like LIKE LIKE LIKE!!!"

ya i like wanted to like rip out her tongue and like shove it down her throat, like ya dude, smmokin :gnash:
and to like make matters worse, after a while i like started saying like, like alot

This is the latest phrase, especially for IT Technicians especially telephone support.

Try this is an Irish accent:

HAVE YA TRIED TURNING IT OFF N ON AGAIN....
