Been gone for awhile....in the hospital.
So some of you may have noticed I haven't been on the JKF for a week or so. That's cause I ended up going to the Emergency Room and then admitted to the hospital for 6 days. I had a collapsed lung!!!! You should be glad to know I watched the CMT channel whilst in the hospital and saw Jewel's video many times!!! It was horrible being in the hospital (my first time EVER), and I'm glad it's over. I'm going to be resting at home until I go to work next Tuesday. I'll get caught up on the board during that time hopefully. I just thought I'd let ya know where I'd been and didn't want anyone to think I've forgotten about my beloved JKF!!!

OMG - how did that happen? You poor thing! Get all the rest you need. You're health is so important.
The first time I was in hospital since I was a very small child was when I was having Seryn and then found myself back in there 5 weeks later. Hated it both times but at the end of the day, you are around the experts and wouldn't be in there for no reason. Get well soon dear |

The collapsed lung (aka 'pneumothorax') happened because I had a procedure on my neck and back to relieve muscle spams (I have a chronic neck/back problem, called Cervical Facet Syndrome) and the needle accidentally punctured my lung cavity. I had Botox injections done by a Neurologist who specializes in this procedure. I was fine during the procedure, but when I got home, took a nap, and woke up - I knew something was VERY wrong. I had a hard time breathing and I had severe pain in my back on the right side on the lower part of the right lung area. Ironically I had joked with the Dr. about popping the lung cavity during my procedure!!!!! OMG! I guess I jinxed myself, huh? ;-)
I went to the E.R. and they put in a chest tube while I laid there on a table wide awake. They did a 'conscious sedation' where it reduces pain sensation but your mind is awake. They cut about 2 inches in between a couple of my ribs and shoved the equivalent of a garden hose in there! It was about a foot long or more of tubing that went into my chest!!! The pain from this is horrible, as you can imagine. The tube allowed excess fluid to drain off and for the air inside the cavity to come out. I'm feeling better today. Each day the pain gets less and less. I go next week to get the stitches out and have a follow-up chest X-ray. When I left the hospital, my last X-ray showed I still had a pneumothorax, but it was small. They determined it could then heal itself from that point on. So I'm at home chillin' out. I have to say how wonderful it is to sleep in my own bed again!!! Thanks for all the well wishes!

oh man! You can't nap after a botox shot! Not that I know from experience, LOL, but pastic surgeons say that to their patients because botox takes a while to settle and when you lay down you're shifting the way it's going to settle. Just for future reference! I'm so glad you're doing better, that had to be scary as all-get-out!

No, actually this is not true - at least from my experience anyway. I get my injections for medical reasons, NOT cosmetic reasons (maybe it is true for cosmetic Botox?). A Neurology specialist Dr. does my injections and it's covered by my medical insurance. It takes 3-4 days to up to a week for the Botox injections I get in my neck and back to even start being effective. And my neck and back haven't "changed" shape or anything! haha! ;-) I've come home and taken naps after my injections before usually b/c my appointments are early in the morning and I work late the night before. The reason my lung collapsed is simply because the needle went in too far into my thoracic cavity - it went beyond the layer of muscle in my back. It had nothing to do with taking a nap, I assure you. I've had a few rounds of Botox now and it works very well to relieve my muscle spasms. I still recommend it even though this happened to me!

Yeah, it WAS horrible! I still am in shock that it happened to me. Just a freak thing. My Dr. feels terrible about it. He's never had this happen to any of his patients before and he's been doing Botox injections for neurology patients for YEARS. I just fell into that >1% this time.

Probably because when you sleep your vertebrae, nerves, & muscles relax - when you first get up you use them quickly and suddenly and it might cause a spasm - but it doesn't last very long as you start to move around. I get these too. Thanks Robare, my Florida friend! ;-)
