I've been picking my brain over this one:

Can someone explain what the following lyrics mean?

I am wanting...
I am needing you...
To be here.
Inside the...
"Absence of fear".

Close as I can get is she needs someone to fill the void of loneliness, to take away the fear of being alone, but then it would be something like Inside the " presence of fear" or something.

I'm obviously missing something, so I bring it to you guys in hopes you can guide me.

Danni

I don't think Jewel even looks that much into her own lyrics.

It's funny, I never really looked that closely at those particular lyrics. To be honest, I doubt Jewel would know herself anymore. I foten write poems and come back to them years on and wonder what I was on about.

In my own understanding, i felt that the song is kinda prayer song.
I guess a lot of people thought the same way.

These lines:
I am wanting...
I am needing you...
To be here.
Inside the...
"Absence of fear".

:these are words of asking Someone (that Someone in my opinion is God) to be with you when things are just okay but not exactly perfect, when you are safe and everything is well.
Perhaps Jewel wrote it that way for a change, or i don't know what's in her mind when she was writing these line.

I hope this make sense.

and by the way,
i also agree with what "little_bird" and "WhatWouldJewelDo" had posted:

Those lyrics are pretty straight-forward to me. She feels no fear when she's with that person. But, one is able to contradict me by saying she is already in the abscene of fear but waiting for this person.

Maybe she thinks that fear is a good thing, it's definitely exciting, but I really don't think that she would even be able to answer the question of what these lyrics mean.

To me it's pretty straight-forward as well. She is wanting and needing and waiting for someone without being afraid.. that's all that means. I can't believe that you guys are struggling with this one. She is inside the absence of fear.. she is not afraid and she is waiting for someone to come into her life.. that's how I've always "read" this

i think lonelylullaby has the best answer - and most logical - thanks lonelylullaby - i should hire you as an enterpriter for my michael'sjewel fan site and depict all lyrics as a new way to represent lyrics - it'd be fun ;)

:) Are you making fun of me?
But you don't have to hire me Mike I'd do this for free :) Especially since I'm so obsessed with Jewel's lyrics.. and lyrics in general

Well that's goood cuz I always just never knew what to think about it.
Although my friend tori thought it was a rock song before he heard it cuz of the lyrics so its understandable how someone could get the wrong idea about this song.

i agree with R(",)Y. I used to think it was an awesome love song (and still do) but it means more to me (in my own enterpretation) to apply it to my faith (not to say this is what i feel she had intended...i doubt it) but it means more to me as a song lyrically :)
