Im just intrested because i dont think im a Great Jewel Fan. I came to hear of Jewel and listen to her music fairly late, in fact i first heard her about 5 years ago. I admitted to telling Kiera that i only have one album of Jewels and thats 0304.

On a level of 1 to 10 i guess i would be a sad 3
what level of JK fan would you be?

When and how did i first hear Jewel?
Thats simple, about 5 years ago i was just listening to the radio and heard Who will save your souls. I just had to learn more about her as the only person id sing like that before was Eva Cassidy.

I dont have many Jewel things :-( sadly
I have a keyfob and and the 0304 album

So why start a forum? lol - well to be honest when i joined the official forum i wasn't really that impressed. I suppose ultimatly they will always have more members etc, but its my own way of thanking Jewel for making me smile.

As most Euro members of JKF will know, Jewel's not played on the radio much, so i intend on having her songs played everyday by hounding the radio stations and parking my bus in front of their studios and demanding her new album be played!!...........ok im going off the track now.

So, basically on a scale from 1 to 10 what level would you be and why

:lalala:
dave. (whos not a real JK fan, and is in fact just trying to immitate being one lol)

Well you surprised me when you said that to me. And it made me realise that you don't have to have much of Jewel music just to realise how great she is. However, you are missing out BIG TIME if you don't go and buy the other albums. Debatably, 0304 isn't her best work but that is more my own personal opinion and not something I want to get into now but in saying that, I mean that if you love 0304, then you'll just adore everything else she has done. Again, I stress, my opinion...but I know you Dave so I know you'll agree.

Anyway, I was in my bedroom and I was about 13 and the radio was on. I heard You Were Meant for Me on the radio as I was walking out and just couldn't believe what I was hearing. The particular show I was listening to would be repeated on the Sunday so I made sure I taped it. I played that tape to death and trekked every record store I could to get hold of the POY album. Eventually got it ordered in and I was hooked. No way was music the same to me. Up until then, it was an interest, suddenly, it became something meaningful and relative and more importantly, Jewel made it original!

I pre-ordered every new release from then on, including A Night Without Armor (which came out when I was in College) and it wasn't til about 97-98 that I realised her real impact on the world and the hundreds of other songs available to hear.

I have loads of stuff relating to Jewel (including the keyfob) and even real autographed items, not to mention the 2 concerts and small gig she has done here over her 11 years in the celebrity world.

I consider myself a real Jewel fan. She is number 1 above everything and I started this forum with you Dave to basically give others an outlet to share this mutual interest ne? love of Jewel!

Hmmm well I love her voice; it's very distinct kinda like Sarah McLachlan's. (I think) Their voices just capture me in a moment and I have chills that run down my spine! But Jewel's HOT! But she doesn't make me smile as much as Dave has in last years...really really...

I first started listening to Jewel when "Who will Save your soul" first started being played on the radio. I had several people tell me that I look like her and I bought the cd and fell in love with every song. I must say when people tell me I favor Jewel that is like the best complement ever! I've been told more lately that I look like Renee Zellweger so I guess either one is okay with me! Anyways, I've been a huge fan of her music and poetry for 10 years now.

Jewel and Renee do have very similar features. I remember seeing Renee Zellweger on a magazine cover and first thought it was jewel.

Anyway...sorry am going :offtopic:

Well, I was talking to someone online in 1996 who mentioned Jewel. I decided to just take a chance and buy "Pieces of You" and it grew on me pretty fast. Every once in awhile I buy a CD without being familar with the artist as long as I know it's not rap, R&B, or hip-hop. I'm mainly a classic rock fan, but I also like some soft rock (especially 80's), and a little bit of folk and country.

I've bought every album since then. I've also bought both books on both hardback and CD. And I've been to 2 concerts.

I think "This Way" is my favorite album, but I like "Pieces of You" and "Spirit" a lot as well. "0304" is a good album but a little bit different than what I was used to. I still like it though.

Like Kiera, I head YWMFM on the radio when I was about 13/14... I think Capital FM liked playing it which I listened to in those days! I bought YWMFM on CD single and didn't really investigate any further till my friend did me a minidisc of Spirit in summer of 2001 (I think)... I bought This Way on import on newly found "play247.com" (as it was called then!) for ?9.99... then got POY in Woolies sale that year for ?3.99... then got Spirit 2CD from MVC the year after for about a tenner - I think. It's a little sketchy! All I know is, "This way" was my first album of her's I bought, then I filled in the gaps :)
2001-2002 is when it all went bonkers for me Jewel-wise :)

Jewel-stuff wise - I have 3 POY's (all different), 3 Spirits' (One 1CD, 2x 2CD versions - I bought one dirt cheap in London as a backup!), 3 "This Ways" (My original one that's got played to death, a dirt-cheap spare and a promo) and one 0304 (One is more than enough :P). I've got a load of singles and single promos too - rareist thing I have I guess is the Phyliss Barnabee CD, haven't got Save the Linoleum. Other than that, the promo of This Way (radio remix) I have is pretty rare, as mine is made in Germany and the only ones I can find online are made in the US! I've got a This Way and Spirit poster on my wall (check out the CD collection thread for that!), a signed photo that I got given at the Portsmouth Guildhall gig in 2002 and that's probably about it. I don't own "Joy" I'm afraid, or any of Jewel's poetry!

Btw - did someone say a cross between Renee and Jewel?! *faints*

Thankyou :D

I haven't really met her... I've sat very near to her (in the front row - probably a few metres away) when she was on Terry & Gaby on Channel 5 a few years ago... that's about as close as I get! We exchanged a few smiles, hehe :)

I heard YWMFM on the radio and managed to get a friend holidaying in the U.S to get me the single. Then I bought POY and kept getting stuff from then onwards. I have all the albums, A Night Without Armor, Chasing Down the Dawn, 3 other books about Jewel, A LIfe Uncommon DVD, Lilith Fair DVD and numurous other things. Then in 2002 I finally got a computer at home and started getting the unreleased music.

I have stood very close to her - it was after a concert and she was signing autographs but I didn't get one :mecry:

My husband actually contacted Jewel's management prior to one concert to see if Jewel could set up my husband in proposing to me. They refused, but I can understand why - you don't want to go to a concert to see the singer reading out cheesy messages. It was a nice thought though!

Yeah but akasha that would have been soooo cool to have had Jewel say the vows.
At the end of the day, Jewel's human, im sure that sometimes if your lucky in a certain place at a certain time she will do crazy mad things for fans.

Thing is to ask, but dont expect. That way you dont feel let down.

For the record, Jewel's management are NOT my favourite people in the world right now. Im sure 100's of fans feel the same.

Nice story though akasha, can we call you by your email name ?

I first heard Jewel in January 1996. I was in San Diego and she was on the local station. Her voice immediately captured my heart...her voice was/is so angelic. I bought Pieces of you...and fell in love with every song. She has been my favorite ever since. I own every album and then some.

My sister and I were at both nights of the Live at Humphrey's concert...and are lucky enough to be on the DVD in several shots. That was the BEST concert!

My daughter and I had the pleasure of meeting her in March of 04. She was so gracious, shy, sweet and tiny! (at least at my height she seemed tiny hehe)

She will always no matter what new artist that comes up, be my all time favorite. I am waiting with great anticipation of her next CD....without a doubt it will be great no matter what she has on it. It is Jewel after all!!

Well at first I was only a 6 or 7 out of 10 fan. It all started when I heard WWSYS on the radio I was 10, it was just a couple of weeks before I turned 11. It was that song alone that peaked my interest and then I saw the new cd in a bin this is 95' at the grocery store when I went with my mom and she bought it for me. So I got the POY album shortly after it was released. I played that CD to death, the songs were so simple, I learned Foolish Games on the piano, I'm not actually all that in love with YWMFM but I still liked the CD. I didn't get into Hands because they over played it on the radio, but then I heard Down So Long this is late in 1999, I got that album, I liked that a lot. By the time This Way was about to come out I had already pre-ordered it. It wasn't until 2002 when I first saw her in concert that I went from a 6 or 7 to a twenty. Then I went all out downloading rare bootlegs and collecting rare CD's such as STL and Bits n' Baubles. Then in 2003 I went to the Intuition fest in Central Park NY, it is to this day the best concert I have ever been too, all the 0304 songs sounded so rocky, T-bone was still there so it was all good. Then I met her in 2004 so by this time I was a die-hard fan... she'd have to do something very drastic to change my attitude towards her, she's just so sweet, and short. :P

Hi Dave!!! :urok:
I wanted to reply on this topic with undivided time, it's the reason why it took some time for me to add my story.

(This is a long story, be patient on reading it)
Back in 1996, i was still on my first year college, the Philippines was busy listening to grunge music, NIRVANA et al.... I was hook with a song called "RUNAWAY TRAIN" by Soul Asylum (I still listen to it once in a while). It was also then that i started collecting records (cassette tapes in particular) as you know, I am living in a third world country, so things which are in with you comes later with us.
That same year, I remember this saleslady from Tower Records recommending me this "Pieces of You' tape (the first ever released), it has Grammy Nominee sticker on the cover which was of course impressive, so i got it, i listened to it, once, twice, but that was it. Years had past, Spirit came, i didn't buy a copy though it had a big promotion over here, Jewel became MTV-ASIA Artist of the Month (May 1999), but i wasn't paying much attention of JEWEL yet.
Not untill i had listened to "WWSYS" (vh1-storyteller-live version). You know that VH1-Storyteller compillation album.Wow! that version blew me away. I found myself hook on that song, i played it a billion times, and told my friends about that song.
It was around year 2000, when Jewel took a break I began to fall in love with her music. So then, i took away POY album from my collection and put it in a very special place, then i started collecting Jewel stuff. The happiest and most rewarded was when i got "A LIFE UNCOMMON-DVD", i didn't attend my classes for a week and locked myself in my room, bought everything i needed, food, water and everything, for 1 week i was watching that DVD, every second, i never got tired of watching it and not still up to this moment.... Now, JEWEL has become a big part of my life. For me "SHE'S THE GREATEST", "THE BEST", and my LIFE will never be complete without her music. I have all her 5 CD's, 5 DVD's, and more unreleased stuff.
But i've never seen her performing live. She hasn't been in our country but I'm still hoping she will visit the Philippines soon.
To all the co-members, you know your stories of watching her live, of seeing Jewel in person, makes me smile...It makes me happy as if I was also there. But, what makes me more special is that knowing I'm not the only person in the world who believes that this GREAT ARTIST MUSIC deserves to be heard by the rest of the world.

I don't remember how I got introduced actually. I think I just saw her Foolish Games video a long time ago on TV and I knew You Were Meant For Me but I wasn't a fan for a while until something shifted.. I think I downloaded the video for foolish games and decided to check out the album and got Pieces Of You. I don't know how can you hear songs like Who Will Save Your soul and Daddy and not be a fan :)
Honestly I was a little disappointed with Spirit though.. her first album seemed much more raw and real.. this one a little more poppy

I totally feel the same way about Spirit... I thought it was rather dry, except for Jupiter, Down So Long, Deep Water, and Barcelona... the rest of the songs just seemed a little to lecturesque.

Hmmm, being i'm a bit more of a dark metal fan more than anything else...i must say though one night i chipped round me chums and they had MTV on in the background, and while they were doing what they were doing i could'nt turn my eye away from this lush blonde singing 'Angel Standing By' live on some MTV awards thingy...it was Jewel and her angelic voice did it for me, so from that moment on i was hooked...within the next few days i just had to go out and get me a copy of that 'Peices Of You' album....and the rest they say is history!
Anything musicaly of Jewel i do me best to get me grubby hands on it :P but on a scale of 1 - 10 i suppose i'd rate meself a 5 or a 6 maybe i do own all her albums except 0304

I don't remember which song got me first- Who Will Save Your Soul, or You Were Meant For Me, but I do remember I liked that she was different, natural, not all glammed up
I really like her poetry
but, I have to admit I like Intuition as well, though my first reaction to her more glammed up image was "Yikes!"
so, even though I don't have much Jewel stuff, I do like her
