maybe my blonde roots are showing but....aren't all lobsters blue, dark blue at least? Or is that not what's weird?

-unless i am sorely mistaken- maine lobsters are normally a dark reddish-brown color, whereas this one that they found was a very bright and rather pretty blue

I thought they only turned that colour when they are cooked.

I have NEVER eaten lobster and generally know nothing about them except that they actually give birth to little lobsters, not eggs.

What a strange conversation! I like it though, educational.

Decided to ask my Dad who used to so lobster potting off the coast on Dublin. Lobsters are generally a very dark blue/black colour but it is rare to find a bright blue one though not unheard of.

Well ya learn something new everyday!

Yes, I lived in Maine and Maine lobsters are kind of a dark almost reddish brown color. They turn bright red after a few minutes in a boiling pot. I have also heard of blue ones and seen photos of them before. I've even heard of albino ones. All these weird colors are extremely rare though.

It seems the dark blue ones are the commonly found lobsters here in Ireland. Even my other half did some lobster potting, I have just found out. I didn't know that about him before.

I still think it's weird us having this conversation but like I said before...it's an education.

He must of got fed up with Ireland, walked along the atlantic bed all the way over to Maine!

i wouldnt be surprised if it was the water, but no, it was just one of those rare freak things...
however mike will back me up here, new england ocean water is sooo cold it feels like your limbs could fall off! you dont really get used to the water once you are in, its more like your nerve endings go into a deep freeze!
^_^ yet we still go in!

That's true. Even on the hottest day of the summer it's still so cold. I think if you swam for an hour you might die. :P My parents also own a cabin on a lake in Maine. We swam there when I was young - the water at their beach is so cold because there are natural springs that bubble cold water up through the sand. IN the winter the ice freezes solod enough to drive on. We used to drive our Jeep on the ice and spin in circles.

I hope you do too, Andrea. New England is a wonderful place. I miss it a great deal. The seasons, the wildlife, my family, the ocean, the seafood, and especially the trees. Most people have no idea what it's like to live in a desert. We have trees of course, but not real forests.

i miss the birch trees most of all, and lilacs. although i do really love the live oaks down here with all the spanish moss, so i will probably miss them when we arent down here anymore,
but i will not miss the summer heat!!

To this day, I still have never tried lobster. I am not a big fan of seafood in general and only eat a small selection of fish so I am a bit hesitant.

But it does sound quite tasty when you talk about eating it with some melted butter. Anything sounds nicer with some melted butter.

You can actually purchase bright blue lobsters for your own aquarium. I've seen them in pet stores before. Not sure where they came from.

Hey, my father-in-law, who we affectionately call The Mountain Man will eat anything that moves..........so when he found out we were moving to Florida he joked he was going to come down here and HUNT FLORIDA FLAMINGOS!! We all died laughing, it was so damm funny!!! So now we send him flamingo postcards all the time and tell him that it's prime flamingo season!! (Of course it is illegal, & they're actually really rare in Florida!).....but we all get a good laugh about it!!

Flamingos stay pink by eating shrimpies. Something having to do with iodine or something I think...

now that is funny, i dont think i have any relatives that would eat anything that moves, but we did have Redneck Mountain Cooking, which is what my step dad and uncle always called it when we cooked over the fire at camp

Yeah, that's probably the same thing he does.....it's very Redneck!! :p

well, I take that back partially ('anything that moves') at least, he won't eat his own pets. like cats & dogs....that's a bit toooooo far!!! Squirrels, birds, snakes, deer, just whatever he'll have it on that dang barbecue!! Yuck! Although my husband says snake isn't too bad.... none for me though!

i can't imagine eating snake, one of my relatives way down the line had a redneck backwoods bf who was old enough to be her father but anyways he shot a snapping turtle and they made turtle and noodles and i tried it and it was actually good until I bit into a bone and then i'm like ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh turtle turtly

okay, no dogs and cats... but I'm kind of snake sensitive, so no eating snakes.

Oh yeah, that reminds me they would have "turtle soup" too......they said the fun part was catching the turtle! None for me, thanks.

ok let me rephrase, Redneck Mountain cooking only involves cooking the regular stuff like pot roast, chicken, etc...no snakes turtles or reptiles for us thanks, and nothing reminiscient of the Beverly Hillbillies!

Yes, the Mountain Man father-in-law will not waste an opportunity to pick up a dead deer off the road if it hasn't been sitting there too long (I don't think he'd go so low as to pick up dead raccoons or possums off the road, you know the "puffers" when they're so bloated their legs are all up in the air!!).....I can't believe I just said that, it's so gross!!!

I've found now that I've moved more south in the U.S. it is the same way. For instance it might be a more common scene out in the boonies to see a couple people pulled over fighting over who's gonna take the deer home for fixin'. Seriously a person I work with told me this happened to her, and she sees it all the time. I think she ended up "winning" the deer because she's the one who actually killed it (i.e. she's the one that hit it with HER car!!)

Actually deer jerky isn't too bad..........only know this cause the Mountain Man offered me some and I couldn't say no. It just has a 'gamey' taste to it. But that's my limit!

Yes, it's true!!!!!!!!!!! REDNECKS are very real and can be found everywhere!! I know this because Jeff Foxworthy told me so! (By the way I am no where near a Redneck, but I grew up in a Redneck area....fortunately I escaped to the city and moved to southern Florida):lmao2: :lmao2:

Rednecks get a bad rep.... not all "rednecks" are white trash hicks like they are stereotyped to be...

Bo and Luke are rednecks and they are 2 of my idols, plus I know a lot of real life rednecks who are cool, and I know a lot who are the whitest color of white trash available....

I don't like deer meat but I ate some the other night b/c some guy (no I won't go into that again haha) brought some in and I was trying to be social and I ate some and it was good! He marinated it in cherry vodka so it didn't taste gamey at all :)
