I was wondering what everyone's thoughts about Jewel's vocals. What do you like the most? What do you dislike, if anything?

Myself I enjoy her versatility the most. She can siing lightly, whisper with breathy effects, do a lounge/ jazz song, an aria, yodel, sings with band, sings without, yodel (c'mon it's her trademark!).....I mean it's impressive stuff. I'd like to see some of the other Divas who are "better" than her do half teh stuff she can do!

On the flip side the one thin gi dislike about her voice is her volume. Her range is wicked, high notes galore, but loudness isn't her srtong point. Some owuld also say she doesn't berathe "correctly", pausing mid verse for a breath.

I hope this discussion doesn't spark any malice between us , because that is not my intent. I simply want to know how evefryone feels baout out favorite little songstress and her most valuable gift: her voice. In the end Jewel is gifted and not many peopel see that. Why Jewel has never put out an album with songs that refelct her abilites and such is beyond me thogh one can argue that each album does showcase her vocal range. But anyways what do you think....??

I think she has an amazing voice. I can't believe her ranges. It is just astonishing that she can reach such high and low notes and being able to yodel! Man that is hard to do and she does it so well and so FAST it's like someone put her on fast forward. How does she do it?

Although there are times she does mess around too much with her voice too much in a song and I feel like saying...."Hey stop changing it! I'm trying to sing along but you keep changing it!"

But then I just learn that version and I'm happy again. I just love singing along with her songs and when she changes it, the first couple of times hearing it throw me off and it's like I don't know the song at all then and just feel stupid :P

To say she doesn't breathe properly is probably true but it is what works for her. She has said about voice training before and she has tried it. It wasn't for her and it didn't feel natural so I say whatever suits her, suits me.
I still think she has the best female voice out there!!!!

Nice idea for a thread! Thanks

I love Jewel's voice she really could sing any kind of music. But I have to say that the arrangement of Sattelite that they put on Unedited doesn't impress me all that much. She was on key, she messed up with the guitar (which isn't uncommon), but the way she was singing -dare i say it- kind of reminded me of Jessica Simpson. *insert Shuddering emoticon here*

Speaking of Jessica Simpson. Has anyone heard her new song. -"These boots are made for walking". When I first heard this song I thought it was Jewel singing. It has a similar tone too. " Yes you Can. " I don't know mayby I'm just not Musical minded. I'm alittle to much country. But it has been playing on my mind. Sorry if I upset anyone or find my comment offending.

I don't know why I didn't like that song. (Boots are made for walking), but I guess it is, in one wierd way another, similiar to Yes U Can, in a wierd way or another.

Jewel has true diva's voice. Damn special and powerful. I like those variations between sweet highs and deep, rough sound of her voice...Well, my dad always said she sounds like she's crying ;), but that's the thing I also appreciate about her music, she sounds so emotional.

WELCOME and :hello: lil' sister!!

I know what you mean. I especially love Foolish Games and 1000 miles away for that very reason. You can feel that powerful emotion in her voice. That is so hard to fake that you just know she is feeling it for real!

Jewels range is amazing, she can sing sooooooo low then her high notes are glass shattering.

Sometimes though when she goes all 'little girly' it does make me cringe a little, but that is the only bad thing i would ever have to say about Jewel. Other than that, shes puuuurfect. The thing is i like about her voice more than anything is the fact that she can make you feel a hundred and one emotions in three and a half minutes.....its amazing.

I agree 100%

Jewel really does have an amazing range. Everything from a gritty, raw rock n roll kinda thing (Love me, Just Leave me Alone...I tried to be unlovable...Why couldn't you do the saaaaammmmeeee... :omg: LOVE THAT!!!) To a more soulful, even R&Bish take (listen to the live version of Life Uncommon from PBS?you?ll see what I mean)

What I love too is that you can tell she really feels what she?s singing when she?s live, not just going through the motions. Which I would think is hard to do after signing YWMFW or WWSYS for the millionth time.

Has anyone tried to sing WWSYS ?

I mean, ive tried and failed badly. Theres only one person who can sing it and thats Jewel of course.

What Jewel song do you find hardest to sing along to?

Jewel has the voice of an angel, coz the dont call her the 'Fallen Angel' for nothing eh!?
I'v stated elswhere on this forum that Jewel is known for her soothing sounds and intricate harmonies, taking peoples inner thoughts into deep umbra of tranquility and beauty all because of her amazing angelic voice, like no other female artist can do!!!

and lmao Dave :P funny eh how us guys even try to sing to female artists!!!
...and fail most horribly
But, i'd have to say one song of Jewels i'v never got to grips with has to be 'The Cold Song'....its to quick

Oh Dave that made me laugh! You must sing that for me one day when we're on the phone. Do it on one of the days when the pressure is on and I need a good giggle.

Honestly, what I am hearing in my head of what you would be like singing WWSYS is comical! :lmao:

But you're right, even my attempts would be worthless but Only Jewel can do it right.

Heres a song/poem/rhymie, that doesnt really rhyme about how much i LOVE algebra

exponents make me wanna vomit
percents are a worthless waste of time
who cares about word problems
when you could just write it out in numbers

if you prove that algebraic expressions matter in life
i will eat my own weight in worms

I hate algebra
I hate algebra
If you hate algebra
then clap your hands out loud!!!!

I'd rather stare at rabbit feces
than listen to my algebra teacher
I'd rather chop my foot off
than take algebra again

if you prove that communtative properties matter in life
I will eat my own weight in rotten cheese

I hate algebra
I hate algebra
If you hate algebra
then clap your hands out loud!!!

If you despise algebra
then clap your hands out loud!!!
