The gender curse

The downside to the late-’90s rage for female musicians

By Sarah Liss, CBCNews.ca
February 7, 2008

What sparked my memories was the Feb. 5 release of a new album by Sheryl Crow (http://www.sherylcrow.com/) (Detours) and a new song by Jewel (http://www.jeweljk.com/) (Stronger Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TdwD3Vwecw), the first single from her forthcoming disc Perfectly Clear). It might seem that Crow and Jewel owe their longevity to the marketing of women as a genre. In reality, they’ve survived in spite of the ghetto-ization of female artists. http://www.cbc.ca/arts/images/arts-womensongs2.jpg Jewel's new single, Stronger Woman, was just issued in advance of her forthcoming album Perfectly Clear. How can you write an article about female musicians in the 90's and not mention Alanis!?!

I thought the same. But anyhow its cool that jewel is more mentioned than alanis :cheerleader:at least on this article (cause she always stands a little bit in the shadow of alanis i guess).

I absolutely LOVE this term, it is SO TRUE - I'm sick of this urban crap on radio now:

"ghetto-ization of female artists"
