The gender curse
The downside to the late-’90s rage for female musicians

What sparked my memories was the Feb. 5 release of a new album by Sheryl Crow (http://www.sherylcrow.com/) (Detours) and a new song by Jewel (http://www.jeweljk.com/) (Stronger Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TdwD3Vwecw), the first single from her forthcoming disc Perfectly Clear). It might seem that Crow and Jewel owe their longevity to the marketing of women as a genre. In reality, they’ve survived in spite of the ghetto-ization of female artists. http://www.cbc.ca/arts/images/arts-womensongs2.jpg Jewel's new single, Stronger Woman, was just issued in advance of her forthcoming album Perfectly Clear.
