Jewel posted a new blog today about the stronger woman video shoot. Her concept sounds really cool. I Can't wait to see it!

The Walking Pneumonia Blues
8:58pm

Well, the good news is that I have 3 days off - the bad news is I got "walking pneumonia" while in Arizona, and then kept flying several more days, and singing, so that now I can't even talk...waaahhh! I'm so bummed...it's so sunny and pretty out -I hate wasting it laying in bed. And speaking of laying here, it feels like there is a 300lb man sitting on my chest.

I'm really hoping I get well enough to fly Tuesday to my video shoot in Nashville! We shoot wednesday. I hope you guys like it. It was a hard video to get a good concept for because the directors kept making the video very literal, as if it was all about a man treating a woman bad - which isn't what it's about to me at all. To me, the song is about a woman finding her self worth and satisfaction. It's not about being a victim of a guy that you let treat you poorly. It's about finding strength in yourself to have the life and relationship you want for yourself....and that if where you are makes you unhappy, then fixing yourself and getting what you need - demanding that from yourself. Men always say they want woman who aren't "nags" - fair enough. To me, when a woman feels unsatisfied and unfulfilled in her own life, she gets whiney and passive aggressive and blames it on everyone else. A strong woman is sexy and attractive to a man, because she makes herself happy. She's confident and not waiting for permission from someone else to lead a life they enjoy. I really didn't want this song to be a "down with men song." It's not even an angry song...it's just that feeling when you look down deep and say, "there's a stronger person in me and I'm gonna demand better out of myself." So needless to say, I didn't want a video to be crying over an aloof male.

So, here's the concept i came up with - I hope it's not too metaphorical and "artsie" though...its very simple. It's gonna use visual metaphors to portray how woman have in effect been responsible for binding and restricting themselves. I'm gonna use fashion as the metaphor. We will see 4 women from different areas and time periods, and there will be close ups of what they do to bind theselves - like a geisha with tiny bound feet tittering elegantly on tiny shoes- or a Victorian woman being cinched into a hourglass corset, or a middle Eastern woman in beautiful colorful veils, with nothing showing but her exotic eyes...(each of these women will look sexy and beautiful and may even make you want to try on a corset, because it is so undeniably asthetically pleasing)....and there will be me, singing in front of a microphone with carry-overs from each of these fashion "binders" like high stiletto heals, and a metal corseted belt, and so on. Then slowly I start to undress myself of each of these things - take off the glittery earrings, take off the bracelets, take off the corset, step out of the shoes. And you will see each of these women "un-do" themselves - the corset strings showing a hint of flesh, the hair of the geisha cascading down her back like a silky black waterfall, the veil lifted to reveal a sumptuous Persian mouth. All these women seem impossibly sexier in the natural form...and it will end with me, barefoot now, in a simple slip dress, hair down, playing guitar, uninhibited- a stronger woman. So, not much story line! But, it's the best I could think of...and I gotta get the video done soon or it will be too late!

Anyway, I will let you know how it goes and we'll have some photos to post from the shoot!

WOW! What an awesome idea......Jewel is so smart, I love it.

Hopefully CMT & GAC like it & play it. Might be a little 'out there' for some country audiences....we're talking about a subset of people who are used to more traditional female roles, so we'll see how this goes over. I'm hoping they'll give it a more 'country' treatment so Nashville will be happy with it.

Check out some of Shania Twain's vids, like That Don't Impress Me Much and I'm Gonna Getcha Good. They portray her in anything but a "traditional female role" and she got big airplay on both CMT and GAC. Jewel's concept sounds awesome and it'll be a hit on both networks.

Shania Twain had to fight her way up and it didn't come easy for her. It wasn't until they were forced by the sales of her albums and concerts that she was finally reconized at a great artist. I remember Reba McIntire stating, If Shania was a male she would have been acknowledge as a great artist long before now, that was at an award show that Shania finally got her acknowledgement. So Jewel is going to have to earn her respect with country it won't be given to her. It will be because she is such a great artist that they will be forced to acknowledge her. As her song con't to climb in the charts they won't be able to ignore her.

Thanks for the backup, colorfulhorses! And Shania is also still constantly criticized by Nashville because of all of those things. Many there do not even consider her a 'country' artist. It's sad, but true.

I also meant to add here that I'm not necessarily talking about traditional female roles in MUSIC VIDEOS......I'm also talking about the LISTENERS - the people who live in rural areas that are quite conservative. If you've ever lived there you would understand what I mean (I have). Some videos may be offensive to some of these people. This set of people tend to be quite conservative, and in some ways can seem behind the times compared to the city people. It can take them awhile to catch up with everyone else.

There is also a risk with having a country video that's too artsy-fartsy.....these people may not understand it. This audience prefers literal videos that make sense the first time they see it. There should be no question as to the meaning of the video.

Country music fans are the hardest to win over, but they're the most loyal fans an artist will ever have........

Just my opinion as a life-long country music & video fan.....:acoustic:

Brilliant concept hope it gets translated acrosss to film.
Hmmmm....conservative westerners not getting an "artsy-fartsy" concept, sounds about right. I always wondered how liberal-minded Jewel stays sane in such an environment or maybe it's not as conservative as I, a "city folk" imagine it to be.

^I was wondering about that also. Getting off topic here but... How did Jewel and John Rich get along so well?. Isn't he a total conservative that is openly homophobic? Jewel is obviously liberal and has gay friends.

I don't get the impression that he is homophobic AT ALL. For goodness sakes, on his guitar he has it written out in masking tape, 'LOVE EVERYBODY'. That is his motto in life, and I think it's very cool!! He's more liberal than you might think....

Yes, there was a quote from John Rich implying that gay marriage was gross. He later released a statement retracting it and trying to cover his ass.

Yeah I heard about him making some comment about it being gross and then he made a statement apologizing.

This is America he has the right to say he feels that Gay marriages are wrong, that doesn't mean he doesn't like gay's as people. But we are off the subject here, I can't wait for this video to come out, I think it will be a hit. But how are the adds doing on radio do we know?

Jewel has been in Nashville working on the video for her single "Stronger Woman." She says the video will use visual metaphors to portray how woman have in a way been responsible for binding and restricting themselves. The video portrays four women from different areas and time periods with close-ups of what they do to restrict themselves. One woman is a geisha with tiny bound feet tittering elegantly on tiny shoes. Another is a Victorian woman being cinched into a hourglass corset and a middle Eastern woman in beautiful colorful veils, with nothing showing but her exotic eyes. Jewel says, quote, "Then there will be me, singing in front of a microphone with carry-overs from each of these fashion ?binders' like high stiletto heals, and a metal corseted belt, and so on." As the video continues, Jewel starts to take off each of the things that binds her -- the glittery earrings, the bracelets, the belt, the stilettos. At the same time each of the previous women starts to reveal a more natural self. Jewel says the video ends with her barefoot in a simple slip dress, hair down, playing guitar -- an uninhibited stronger woman.

No.... in the people country weekly magazine it shows stars with their favorite cowboy boots. Jewel's pair was one of the most expensive at $2000.
