I attended the PBR last night to see Jewel's performance. Wow, has she fallen off. ive been a fan for years, and never seen her play live. first of all she cancelled a radio performance for friday, because she "didnt feel like it". then the PBR performance was nothing short of pathetic. she sang to a pre-recorded backing track, and didnt even try to look as though she were playing the guitar she was holding. she did the one song, and then was quickly escorted off stage by a white guy with a jerry curl. i was appalled. she was very cold, and made it a point to get up on stage and back off before anyone could bother her.

by the way, make sure to watch the performance on NBC tonight, if you dont believe me.

ive seen her play live twice and they were both AMAZING performances. maybe she is sick. she has been working really hard to promote her song. if you dont think she still has talent, then you should look at the other videos posted of her performing stronger woman at radio stations. she still has it.

OK, first, i know for a fact she did not cancel the radio show due to illness, as i have heard the message that she and her manager left at the station. my girlfriend's sister works there, and actually met her last year in nashville. she even mentioned how stand-offish Jewel was when they met. maybe she didnt feel good last night, ill give you that. but still, she didnt say a word to the crowd, didnt put any effort into her performance, and made the girls who stood on stage with her wait in the regular seating area (and from what i saw never even met with them to say hi, they were in the vip room with us earlier). it was hard for me to digest too, ive listened to her for over 10 years. but i am a musician myself, and i cannot continue to support someone who shows out like that. it was disrespectful to everyone there. especially when the crowd was the target audience for your next record. 1000 great shows cant make up for last night. but im just sharing my opinion, and you can take it for what its worth
I guess this is just your opinion, but I don't think she did that bed... I'll try to watch the performance on youtube and see it myself...
Although, I don't believe Jewel didn't put any effort in her performance - that's just not Jewel!

Everyone has their bad days. As much as Jewel has been traveling and performing the same song over and over lately I believe it. I don't hold it against her though. Every other radio station show reaction has been EXTREMELY positive. Jewel still has it, just tired I'm guessing. And who knows, Maybe she was forced to sing to a backing track for some reason...couldn't get a band there...forced by NBC...or any other number of reasons. She could have been mad about that and for that reason didn't care. Point is none of us are insiders in Jewel's camp of people so we don't know exactly why certain things happen. We shouldn't be so quick to judge her based on one or two bad days.

Thanks natedogg! Her voice is definately not at its best here. Especially in the beginning. Again there could be a few reasons for that, earpiece volume, audio problems etc. Also she says Thank You twice at the end. I'm not sure why you would expect her to talk to the crowd anymore than that. They came to see a rodeo not a Jewel concert. Did Tom Petty talk to the crowd at the superbowl tonight? No...but he said thank you at the end. :)

I can't imagine how Jewel would ever fit in a scene with rodeo and bullriding ...

i dont know, "hey, how ya doin, here's my new song...." something. like i said, my first show, i expected much, much more. we can make 1000 excuses, but at the end of the day its the artist's responsibility to make sure they sound good. be that the right technical staff, or a proper soundcheck. i just got the impression she didnt care, and ill never be able to forget that.

Aww man, doesn't it totally suck when someone you look up to and expect to be perfect turns out to be only human after all?!
Ok, I get the point, natedogg.... The start isn't one of the best, but now I just realized that I never really heared Jewel singing on backing track...I get the feeling it just doesn't suit her... :)
Please post the video when you can I really like to see it:P
Although, she didn't sound cold to me...she says thank you at the end and it sounds just like the usual Jewel...
But hey, Natedogg, i'm sure Jewel will win you back again:)

I really love JEWEL. And she loves singing, as you'll hear her in this performance. No matter how tired she was, she still managed to perform because she loves her fans and her job. (Based on what I feel of course.)
ENJOY!!!

Hmmm. Yeah, I've seen Jewel live about five different times and she has always blown me away--every time she has been amazing. This performance is definitely not her best and my guess is that it has something to do with singing to the recorded back track. Jewel always adds her own little flare when she plays and sings--she really gets into it. Don't let this one performance ruin your perception of Jewel. She is by far the most engaging performer I have ever seen.

I definitley agree that a backing track doesn't suit Jewel in her performing style. I have seen her 5 times in concert and met her once. She is hands down the best live entertanier I've ever seen. As for maybe not seeming into the performance, maybe she was frustrated with herself. I play shows out and sometimes even when you're tryin your hardest, you know it's not your best night and that's that. And when I met Jewel she WAS painfully shy, it was almost awkward...but you can't hold that against someone. I think Jewel is amazing!

i wonder why she didn't get a band to play instead of the backing track. maybe it was too last minute or they didn't have room.

I think she used the backing track so that people could hear the countryness to it. It's on her website and it says is sounds the way the song is supposed to sound. I'm guessing if she performed solo acoustic it would sound similar to her other songs when acoustic. This way shows the country sound so that those who don't already know, Jewel is going country. I agree a band should have been used instead, but maybe it was last minute. Or maybe on a new record label she needs to get a new band arrangement/agreements made.

Here is Jewel's new blog post on myspace...she mentions the PBR performance...straight from Jewel herself!
Hi All!
Category: Music
I'm on another radio tour. Today is Arizona - Phoenix and Tuscon, headed to Seattle tonight. My song "Stronger Woman" is doing good! I'm in the 30's already on the Country chart! And it's very early on, so it's a good sign. Fingers crossed - there's sure no guarantee, but I hope it catches on and moves up the chart! It also came out on iTunes yesterday, and it's 14 there, so hopefully that will keep selling. I know it's 14 because of you guys - so thanks!!
My days off were good. I rested a little and then headed to Winston-Salem for the PBR performance - which went good...I thought....till I watched it the next day! We handed the mix to NBC and somehow by the time it aired, they only turned on the input with my vocal mic so you couldn't hear my guitar or the band! Such a bummer! So much time and effort by so many people and it got messed up....geez! I'm gonna post the board mix from that night so you can hear how it was supposed to sound! Oh well, thats life...
I'm writing a "blog from the ranch" but it has turned out to be an epic long blog, so I decided to write this in the meantime just to say hi...hope to see some of u in Seattle! Or Salt Lake City...or on line!
Xx Jewel

Are you still convinced Jewel didn't do a good job on the PBR?
I just saw the video and I think she was fantastic! :)
