View Full Version : Work Sucks

This is a thread dedicated to all the suckiness of work. Whether having a job, going to school or even doing chores around the house, we all know that most work sucks. So, post away with whatever is on your mind.
PS: In case you're wondering, I haven't been here in a while because I just got my job back at... Wendy's. -_- Hence, this topic being made. By the way, yes, we serve chili without the severed fingers. :P

Angel, i was sitting here (at work) thinking mmm mmm id love a mac donnalds or a burger king.
About work sucking, hmm, it does sometimes, depends for me whether the University is full of students, if its not, then works great :-) i get to play on the net all day, do very little and still get paid woohooo!.
Mind you, today i was driving to work singing along and i was in a world of my own, you know how it gets sometimes. Well, i sat in the car park with my music playing looking around, daydreaming then all of a sudden you switch the cd off and BANG!! ..... your back into normality, and for me thats the part of work that i hate, when it goes quiet. All you can hear is the constant traffic hum and, well, just stuff lol. TOO NOISY!
Anyway, i thought id share that with you.
This isnt a bad subject to start about who does what, me, im just an IT Technician who works at a University, pretty sad, but someones gotta do it. How about everyone else?

Oi! I'm an IT Support Analyst (technician if you will)...does that make me sad? Watch your words PAL!
Ya see, he calls himself an IT Technician but he knows nothing really. Always asking me stuff... you're useless Dave.
Tracy, I had wondered where you got too. The place just hasn't been the same without you. Glad you're back and in full form. Great thread.
I work in a large retailers Head Office here in Dublin in the IT deparment. Seeing as Pc's can go belly up at any time and not on others, I have both good days and bad days. Yesterday, I was rushed off my feet and today, it's dead. I prefer to be moving because on quiet days, I get bored and just want to fall asleep so work sucks on days like today. Some days, I just can't take hearing people's trivial PC problems. 'I need it now?' 'How long will it take? I have a meeting and I need to get a document for it' or when you have worked your butt off for someone and they don't even acknowledge your help, just take take take! Grrrrr!
Let's just hope today goes well. There is still the afternoon to get through. I have to study so the least amount of work the better.

I finally found a job, when I finally start I'll come back here and tell you all about it. I can't believe that I'm actually going to be working for the US Postal Service. But I figure that I like being outside, I like dogs, and best of all I don't have to wear a suit and tie, and blue is the best color on me. ;)

well, i am a work at home mother, and for the most part it is good, like today, so i dont have anything to gripe about. but you know how it is, when those cute little faces start getting cranky and tired and a bit attitudinal ( i made that one up ) then it is frustrating.
i used to work at dominos, and what sucked about that was my manager went psycho out of nowhere, she got so mad one time she started kicking the coke cooler and screaming at all of us :P then of course there were the drunk old guys i would deliver to who would ask me back to their place after i was off work--bleh! plus while i was there i had taken up smoking to deal with the stress--double bleh!
then i worked at subway, which wasnt sooo bad, but working til 3 am fri. and sat. really sucked, then there were the revolting customers who couldnt grasp the concept of flushing...or not using the toilet when it is clogged, or aiming better...i wont go on, some of you may be eating.
i enjoy just taking care of my girls better, now i am not working at night i am much less stressed!

To work for the postal service you need to go out and buy a gun, KJM. Preferably a large caliber assault rifle. You need to have it on hand just in case you become disgruntled. ;)

I'll have a water-gun... they'll never know.
I will never have a gun for self defense, there's many better alternatives, like flaming arrows, swords, chains, pepper spray and toasters.
Plus they never seem to make the news for saving the day. Just recently there have been school shootings around where I live, my conscience (believe it or not mine is working double time) would disallow me from ever using a gun.

Well that's a schedule I'm familiar with. Working until 3am and (when I was working at McDonalds) since they had drive-through open the whole night overnight shifts as well. And I remember taking care just of the things that you remind me of ;) Good thing that job is done for me
But I need to start looking for another job all over again this summer (actually I'm already behind) so I'm kind of scared that I'll end up at one of those places again :mecry:

omg, working til 3-4 am will mess with your mind too, i mean noone would come in for hours, so my co-worker and i would see who could chuck our pen across the store and hit the signs, or one night arlene and i put stickers all over our faces, rolled up our pants, put our hats on backwards and when these 2 guys came in for some subs we couldnt stop laughing. they musta thought we were baked :P  ya that was a little fun, or we would sing really obnoxious songs at the tops of our lungs to keep each other awake enough to clean the place...
why am i sharing all this? :dunno:

Ah, I love working nights more than day shift. Mainly because 1) I usually stay up late anyways 2) I hate waking up in the mornings and 3) depending on the manager, we can sit down when we've caught up on whatever we're closing that night (drive-thru, grill, dishes, dining room). But, one thing I don't like about closing is that there are only 3 or 4 employees on hand, and sometimes one or two are too busy to help take the orders out. The customers really are the worse thing about the job, mostly. But, without them, we don't get paid! :o
LonelyLullaby
05-26-2005, 01:28 PM
:) Eibhlin I had fun at nights there too, but eventually the night shifts start to get to you- especially if you're doing this regularly
They're just incredibly slow and that's why I liked them- not a lot of people, not even a lot of people working with you so it's more fun and intimate, one manager (usually cute ;) ) who has to drive you home unless you have a car..
Well that's only for 3am shifts.. It has its good and bad points
I definitely liked that it wasn't busy and you could relax and you're getting paid as much as if you were running around during the day like a crazy woman :P
And actually Tracy I agree with all of those except that I liked that there weren't a lot of people on the stuff, and I thought that the customers was the only interesting part of the job. The other was to clean, stock shelves, and get the garbage out
As well as making orders and yelling at people in the kitchen :) Just kidding I didn't do that
The thing that I hated the most was to clean tables (and floors) while people were eating- walking in between tables
They stare, complain about anything that might be wrong, talk, feel uncomfortable, and I was just feeling very self-conscious altogether
I'm not looking forward to doing this again :mecry: But a job is a job, right?
As long as you get paid ^_^ It's amazing the crap that you put up with

Work for me is an aggravation not because my job is strenuous but because I have to work with the most dimwitted, lazy, immature, @$$holes around. Common sense lacks in the Food and Nutrition Services of the hospital I work in. Ugh, I closed tonight (or... last night, since it's 6:00 am right now) and I just wanted to tell the people to GO AWAY! We were busy almost all day for some reason, and I was stuck on the side (drive-thru) making sandwiches. Things didn't slow down until about 10:30 or 11:00 and it sucked. :( I have to close tonight also, and I really hope it's not as bad. And now, I have to go to bed. Even though I'm all hyped up, but I still need to sleep. Good night/morning!

lol, ya in the winters, or off season, i would close the place down by myself, which got extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemely boring. there would be times when like 3 hours would go by with maybe one customer. i would often just turn off the open sign and close down early, but then had to hang out until the specific time to clock out, otherwise i would get nabbed for closing ealry etc. or talk on the phone, since i would have everything else done. this one time these kids wanted me to make them subs after we were actually closed, and when i didnt they got sauce packets from the dominos next door and covered my cars back window with marinara sauce...jerks!
ya customers are a cruel irony, you hate to serve many of them, but you need them to get paid :P
JThisWay620
05-29-2005, 12:56 AM
Marinara sauce...Gods I get that on my shirt all the time at work...can't get the crap out half the time. Has anyone been left with no stock done by a previous worker? My example is on the wekeends I have to make Jello for the floors of the hospital. Now we are a very large hospital so I have to make multiple trays of regular and diet jello but applesauce as well. I've had many weekends where I was left with one or two trays of each when we go through that amount in one day!!!! So I have to haul ass and make extra trays of the stuff just to break even. It's like how hard is it to return the courtesy? :bang:

man, i ued to go crazy overstocking everything when i was working at subway, but the crew before me usually left me with no prep done, so i had to bake bread, slice tomatoes, stock the line, chips, juices etc...us closers got no repsect i tell ya!
which is why i didn't go back last summer!
have you ever delivered pizzas? i just loooove the customers who not only DONT tip, but stand there and make you count out every last penny...after their dirt road nearly swallowed your car whole on the way to their place! :mooner: to you Teresa Drive!!!

I liked my customers :)
And actually I have a story as well
Someone ordered a sandwich and apparently how it was prepared really sucked.. they came back after we've washed everything and were getting ready to close down.. we had to restart the grill and get the supplies back
They were waiting for about half an hour in the freezing cold (they ordered through drive-thu and parked outside McDonalds but the girl came back to our drive-thru window to complain) in Canadian winter waiting for this and she was very unhappy and kept telling us to hurry up
(How fast the grill warms up wasn't up to us) we had to get all of the supplies out again. Anyway once she got her sandwich and we were out her and her boyfriend I guess hated us and decided to scare us a little so when we called the taxi and went with the whole group they actually followed us in the car for a while along the streets. It was pretty scary I mean we didn't know what they were going to do and if they were going to beat up one of the first people who gets out of the car.. But they drove away before we made the first stop. It was just scary because as we were riding and looking back the girl was giving us that shake of the heat like "oh, yeah, we are here, to get you"
It was scary. Either way it happened all the time that people wouldn't stock up because well :) They were lazy and everyone can't wait to get off the shift
But ThisWay I work at the hospital as well now (volunteer) but in a different line of work. So the hospital is something that we definitely have in common ^_^
I just love being there. And Eibhlin you didn't go back the next summer because the previous shift wouldn't stock up? ;) (I've never delivered pizzas)

05-30-2005, 09:52 AM
lol, I admit that when I work from maybe 11:30 to 5, I don't stock as much as I should. :P I do some, but not a lot, which is more than what I can say about most of my employees. A lot of them are too lazy to really do anything, and someimes I'm the one who really keeps track of how much fries, nuggets and strips need to be cooked and such. There is one thing that I absolutely loathe, and that's making salads. It probably doesn't seem like a big deal to you guys, but it's such a pain, especially when we've run out and we have to make one with each order. It's awful.
You know what sort of customers I dislike the most? One or more school buses full of teenagers. There was one friday night and the away team of a High School football (or, it might've been basketball) game came in. It was between 30 minutes to an hour before the dining room could close and it was hell. Not so much of having to do all those orders, but the guys were RUDE. They were yelling and kept trying to talk into the microphone at the register. One guy even had the nerve to try to tell us at the drive-thru to help the people at the dining room get those orders out. We had orders at the drive-thru! We couldn't automatically stop what we were doing and help them! If that wasn't worse enough, when they finally left, the place was a MESS. The chairs were in different places, the floor and tables were nasty and someone even put a bunch of salt on the window sill. Rude idiots. And the dining room was neat and tidy right before they came in too. Now, I know that not all teenagers on buses are like that (I used to be one too. ;)), but that one group seriously needed to chill out. I hate people like that.
LonelyLullaby
05-30-2005, 01:28 PM
Heh I remember making salads :P
And Tracy we had some kind of a sports club near-by and right 20 minutes before closing every once in a while we used to have about 20 guys (teenagers and older) pouring in
I remember what it's like to cook for those guys and clean up after them ;)
Not fun

lol, no, people not stocking wasnt why i didnt go back. it was 2 reasons, one being night shift really wore me out- i had no energy to keep up with the girls during the day, and secondly, with joe in school the pell grant and g.i. bill give us more money than i was making anyways. and just to remember the positives, there were some really cool customers that made it not so bad ^_^

Yeah, that's true. :) In particular, there's one woman who comes to the drive-thru almost every night for a Side Salad. We call her the Side Salad lady and always give it to her for free... unless the boss manager or assistant manager are there closing that night. She's really nice. :)

yup! i remember tuna on a croissant guy, he was always really cool. lol, then when i was working with my friend chris there was foot long on white woman and her boyfriend or husband (not sure which), whenever she came in when chris was working i was NOT allowed to touch her sandwich, because chris had to make her a "footlong on white, because she likes it footlong and she likes it white" it was hilarious, esp. since she was old enough to be his mother. ^_^ :P

OMG, my first day was today, it was all orientation and I was with a bunch of really old people. They kept asking really bad questions, I know the only stupid question is the one that nobody asks, but these people were pretty special. I start my actual job tomorrow, hopefully it will go a bit faster. Something about sitting in one spot for 8 hours is just very, very boring. OH yeah, and great news, I won't need a weapon, infact, nobody is allowed to have a gun liscensed or not on post office property, it's a federal crime. *relief*

Well I figured I'll bring this thread back up again to complain about my life a little- I got two jobs, on top of being at the hospital, one at a restaurant and another at Dominion (a supermarket), and I'm going crazy
Either you don't have a job at all or they all come at once altogether ^_^
I'm tired and I'm spending five or six days out of seven working
So I figured I'll complain to you guys
Also customers can be incredibly rude, I cried because of one at the restaurant because she came back complaining that I didn't give her enough rice (when the last time I was making an order the manager told me that I've put too much), and she was yelling and complaining and turning to the other customers to tell how horrible I am :mecry: The boss wasn't happy either

Work from home computer, average $5/claim, approximately 180 claims a week. Each claim takes about 5 minutes typing at 20GWAM, but since I'm at 83GWAM I should be able to do them within a minute! I'm reallly excited about all this money, i think i need a shot.

oh my gosh Gemma, i know how you feel with the whole restaurant thing
when i worked at Papa Gino's (back when i was like 16) i got in trouble for putting too much cheese on the pizza's
when i worked at the Great American Cookie Co. i got introuble for scooping too much dough and making the cookies too big
then when i scooped less dough i got introuble for pressing the dough down so the cookies would bake bigger--never mind that it made the customers feel like they were getting more cookie for the money
i have only ever had one customer who brought me to tears though, and that was because i accidently drove onto his lawn mistaking it for the driveway, but he ended up coming in to the store to apologize for being so mad

well I'm NOT having a good time. In the last 2 months in particular, I have been more stressed than I ever have been before. I do almost everything and way more than my fair share. I have been doing a damn good job and what do I get for it...JIP when the stuff I shouldn't be doing doesn't get done. I do someone a favour, then they expect me to always do it then I get told off when I don't do it. How can I do it when I am busy doing picking up after almost everyone.
Needless to say, as saddened as I am about leaving my company, I am looking for another job. I am being taken for granted! I have raised the issue with my boss and he ain't listening. He happens to be best buds with the 2 lasiest people in the team so he lets them away with murder. It's not the company, it my department so I will be sad to leave it after nearly 6 years. But enough is enough and I will have a heart attack before I am 30 if I go on like this. It can be really depressing and disheartening when I work so hard and get feck all out of it
I feel a bit better now after that rant. Thanks for reviving the thread!

I hope you sort something out , it sucks when you are unhappy. I went through a rough patch earlier this year because of work. The people, the place , everything really got to me and i got very very depressed ( i won't go into too much detail) but then a little miracle happened and i was head hunted for a new job. I received a phone call out of the blue from someone i used to work with and now i am happier than ever, and i am thoroughly grateful every day. Well I pulled the finger out and desiced to get something done rather than just moan and let things get worse.
I went to HR as suggested Andrea. Although I went to see if there were any other jobs suitable for me there coz I really don't want to leave the company. But I also got the word out to a few people that I was looking to move. It has been well known that if a manager gets wind that a hard working efficient person is on the prowl for a new job, they tend to snap them up so hopefully that might happen too.
But more at home in case none of that works, I sat down with my boss and told him how I feel and that I am being taken for granted. He has taken it in hand already. He doesn't want to lose me. I am the number 1 performer apparently *blush* so he'd rather lose the inefficient workers and scout for a new one that is efficient than to lose me. So after he said that...I asked how much I was worth to him to keep so he's looking into a pay rise.
Feel better already! But only if he gets the lads working again.

I think I mostly just put pressure on myself rather than other people.. but right now I've stayed just with one of my jobs since they're giving me about 5 days out of 7 shifts and I need the money.. I just manage to keep up with this job and volunteering at the hospital. You're right though :) I don't want to miss out on my life meanwhile
