In the Premiere of Desperate Housewives Teri Hatcher made a remark about Filipinos - doctors/nurses. She was talking to her doctor and then she said, "Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines."
This is such a big issue in our country now. I thought I share it here and leave it up to you what you think about it.

It's quite offensive actually and not necessary. Are the writers for Desperate Housewives trying to say that the medical qualifications that Filipinos have are unworthy? That's simply not true and I can say that first hand. There are many Filipinos living here in Ireland, working brilliantly and very hard in our hospitals. We would be lost without their expertise and excellent work ethic, experience and friendly nature!

I second that Kiera. We have many fillipino doctors here as well and a lot of them are considered the best we have. That is pretty offensive but then again so is Teri Hatcher's face.

HAHAHAHA that made me laugh. but on a serious note, that is pretty ridiculous. My best friend's parents are both from the phillipines and in the medical profession, and they really know their stuff!

ABC's Public Apology to the Philippines
These news were delivered in "TagLish" (Tagalog/English), it's easy to understand.

Yeah I wasn't laughing at the Desperate Housewives thing at all. My best friend in the world is Filipino and I think very highly of people from the Phillipines. Sorry if you misunderstood what I was laughing at...Thats why I quoted what Last Dance Rodeo said.

I apologize mjuehl3, I know I'm just being too sensitive about this. I can't help it... Call me too patriotic or whatever... Really now, I'm sorry for reading it too fast... I guess you understand where my being sensitive is coming from.
As you see on the latest videos I posted, the entire Philippines is actually very sensitive on this, that it even made the Desperate Housewives hit in the rating game, everyone is curious, so strange i know... grrrrrrr!!!
The irony of this is that I've found out that the role of Teri Hatcher in the series is bithcy... (But still I don't buy it as an excuse, do you?)

Its okay Roy. I completely understand where you are coming from on the issue. It is incredibly disrespectful of them to say something like that.

hey I don't mean to be sort of off topic but that actor playing the doctor is Nathan Fillion. He's one of my favorite actors. He's awesome.

Sum this all up...isn't it just another series trying to create real life, in which WE as a person tend to do or say on a day to day basis!? (heh..well maybe not like these desperate houswives lot  )..but we ALL have our own insulting or racist veiws, depending on how we emphasise or 'come across' to other's when we talk and tackle the subject...maybe it being on how that black or white dentist ripped my tooth out like i was some sort of farm animal..yada yada...just giving extra weight to any person, whoever they are

I could see how it could be offensive. I persoanlly think that it was not that bad of joke. It could of been miles worse. I mean tv does that these days every show from the Golden Girls, To The Simpsons just every show at some point or another has made a racial joke to some extent.
Sometimes they are quite shocking but you gotta have a sense of humor either way and just laugh at it cuz there are too many other stresses in life you just gotta laugh at yourself once and a while.

Majority of the upper class and middle class Filipinos really watch that TV series. They like it, but with that episode of Teri saying those line; everybody was turned off and no one was happy about it. The writer of the series should know how to discern. One of the Philippine senators, made a call to the public to ban/not to watch that TV series. Too sad!

Isn't that kind of harsh to try to banish the show because of a poorly written joke.
I mean i dont like the show it bores me so i could careless what happens to it but that seems a little silly

The said TV series still airs in the Philippines. Though ABC made a public apology to Phil. Medical Practitioners /Association. Well, life goes on. injurious effects can be moderated by taking it as a "grain of salt. Filipinos are very forgiving people.
