How do I attach files on the forum?

For security reasons, it is an option that is turned off.
Here's my thoughts on the issue.
You can post photo files in various formats using the img tags. Any other files can be posted by posting them on a host of your choice and using the http tag. I can't speak for the security issue, but I would see it as a bandwidth issue too. If people posted large files on the forums it might slow the whole place down.
Incidently the "official" jewel forum allows posting of files directly as attachments. Trouble is there is a very severe size limit that makes it impractical. I tried it once, but it was trial an error to drop the file size unitl it was small enough. I think the largest I was able to post was about 17k. Which is about the size of a thumbnail photo.

This is probably a stupid question, but what's the point in attachments? If you can post pictures using the <img>http://imageurl.jpg</img> tag (change the <> to [] ) and link them if they're too big, then isn't that good enough? I'm not trying to start a debate, I'm just curious of what the purpose is.

I can't speak for anybody else. I would assume so you could post non-image files like MS Word files, PDF files, Spreadsheets, HTML files, Zip files, music files or any other non-image file. Since you can always post these on a host and post a link to the file, I'm not sure I see much advantage to posting them on the forum.

Well of course, it is a bandwidth issue here and unfortunately, that is something we are very limited to here.

I'm not asking so much about attachments as much as about pictures. How do you post comics or how do you attach a picture to your post?
I mean without the website. If I save a picture of Jewel (just the picture, without the site) and I want to attach it to my post, how do I do that?
I didn't understand Tracy's explanation

Oh right, well it is actually easier than it seems.
For example, let's say the URL of your image you wish to show is :
http://www.jewel.ie/jewel1.jpg
In your post
- Click the IMG button
- When promted, paste the URL of the image, in this case, the above.
- then click the IMG button again.
If you don't know how to get the URL of an image, all you have to do is go to the site where the image is.
Right-Click the image
Left-Click on Properties
The URL is the 'address'
Copy that exact link, including the http:// part
Any hassles, let me know

Some sites will not let you direct link to the images on their site.
I can't remember who first recommented it, but I upload most images I want to post into a photobucket account. It's free and convenient since they give you little boxes to cut and paste either the url or the url with the IMG tags.
Click here for--> Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com)

I think it was me who recommended it. :P There were a lot of people on the old forum who had problems posting pictures, so I'd always tell them about photobucket. It really is nifty. I've been using it for over a year now. :)
You're probably right Tracy. I think it was you. Photobucket is great and real easy.
Thanks.

Kiera thank you for the detailed explanation, especially how to see the URL that would be an issue for me. Thanks
I hope this thread can stay there for a while so that I can refer to it from time to time, or maybe I can just copy the instructions.. Photobucket is amazing, thank you so much. Actually I needed a place to store a lot of pictures so I was downloading them into a greatest-journal page :P
Thank you guys, this thread is very helpful and Tracy thanks for telling Mike about it otherwise we'd both be in trouble ;)

No problem, glad to help.
It's my job actually. I am an IT Support Analyst so fixing people's PC/Printer and network related problems is my thing.
Here's a tip to have an easy reference to the thread. Copy the URL of the thread and send it to yourself in a PM. That way, if you want to go back to is easily, you can get it straight from your own PM box.
