This is my baby. I am happy to report that my husband Peter and I will become parents in November!
Today I had my first ultrasound. It was a little earlier because I've had some complications but thankfully, everything is fine and the baby is thriving and healthy from what they can see at this stage.
It was a great day as I'd been so worried with everything I've been going through recently, which I won't go into. The most important thing is that so far, so good.
So please say hello to the first JKF Baby!!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/eanin_beag/ultrasound250407detail.jpg
I know it's a bit hard to make out babies on ultrasounds especially as I am only 11 weeks but I've tried to make it easier with some labels.
Needless to say, the Morning (noon & night) sickness has taken it's full hold over me as well as unbelievable tiredness but I'm coming close to the 12/13 week stage when that should all dissipate. Fingers crossed at least!
Congratulations to you and Peter! This is great news! I'm so happy for you!

I have been doing that already. Ever since I read in my baby book that the baby had devoped ears! LOL
Future Jewel fan indeed.
Ma'am,
I'm so thrilled for you, I didn't know that (then again, how could I?). My sincerest congraulations, kindest wishes, and very best regards to yourself, your husband, and your child.
'November'? What a perfect month to have a baby, right when the foliage starts to ripen (or at least where I am it does).
Honestly, I'm thrilled, exstatic, joyous news. I'm so happy for you.
Just wanted to give you my best wishes.
God Bless,

Thst is just the coolest! It's an amazing time, so enjoy the good & not so good times. I'm thrilled for your family! When your ready for naming, Kelli works great for a boy or girl!
Funny, I was thinking for a girl 'Marie'.
For a boy, I think 'Vincent' is a good, strong name. Or one of my old time favoruties i wished my family owuld have named me: 'William'.
Although , can't say much, my family hahs some weird names, somewhere down the line is a man named 'Cornelius Cipriani', he's an Italian. At least, it was 'Cipriani' until some dickhead got ahold of my name at Ellis Island.
So, maybe me suggesting names isn't a good thing, back on topic, sorry guys.
Kelli is wonderufl for a girl, I dated a Kelli once, she slapped me in the mouth.
I'd try 'Samantha' or even go with 'Kiera' again. Who says a woman canoot name her child after herself. My family did it, mom named me one name and dad the other.
Kiera, I say have you pick out one name and your husband (Peter, was it, I'm a little confused?) pick another, and name the child both, first and middle names.

We've got some names picked out but not settled on anything. Just been throwing a few out there to see how we like them. I think we have the girls name set but very undecided on a boys name.
I had a name that I always liked but last Christmas, my cousin had a baby boy. 2 weeks before he was born, I was at her house and I happened to share my favourite boys name. Well, she liked it too and used it. It was annoying at first but then I realised that I could now explore more potential names.
I like less widely used names. I like names that are unusual but beautiful. We have almost 7 more months to think about it so we'll see.

Name he/she Chris you know you want to haha ;) This is kinda off topic but is the name Tiege popular in Ireland? I first saw this name in a book I bought where the story takes place in Ireland. You pronounce the name like league except with a t right?
Little Bird
04-28-2007, 03:19 PM
Yes but it is spelt the irish way 'Tighe' It's just pronounced 'Tiege'
It's nice but Irish names are so commonly used here that we won't be going with an Irish name.

You guys really know how to make a girl feel special. Thanks so much everyone. You're all very thoughtful to wish us well. I'll post the next ultrasound on 9th July. That should be a really good picture as I'll be 22 weeks then. Already looking forward to it.
By the way - it is REALLY nice to see you too back! Especially you Gary (no offence Robbie) but I've missed ya around here...the both of you!

Ya never know...could be you and Laura soon enough!
Sometimes you have to take that plunge. Right now, the idea of paying for childcare scares me. 1 month in a creche costs more than my mortgage for my house. I have no idea how the hell we're going to pay it but we'll come up with something. There are lots of people out there, earning less money than us and they are able to do it. That means we can too...somehow. At least I hope so. We'll find out soon enough. I don't want to give up work at all, and for benefit reasons, I'm better off working but it does mean that we'll need to pay some form of childcare and that's where it gets scary.
I wouldn't know, a coworker of mine's having a baby and I told him a crib will put him back one week's take home.
THank God I won't be having kids, that means no more Sea Island Cotton shirts and trips to Paradise Island.
I hope things are peaceful in Ireland, I know you guys used to suffer from IRA attacks and such, but you couldn't force me to have a baby in America right now! Not with no one, I wouldn't have one even if Jewel berared and mothered it. Things in America are TOO hot and you never know with today's society here in America. And public schools, not happening. If I adopt, the child will be in a private school. I'd have a lot of bills.
Anyway, aside from the negativity, you'll have a little you running about. He'll probably learn Gaelic from you, just like you did, I'd imagine. It's good to teach your child a foreign language.
I'm just so thrilled for you. It's a whole new life, and you'll love it, 'and soon you will see'.
And to Gary, like I said before. 'Well damnation. I'm glad to see you back.' Don't worry, the hatchet's buried and we fellow Southerner's must unite in peace. We should gather together and drink the SOuthern brew of the Mint Julep.
You might remember me under the assumed name 'Jones'. Well, I've caught on and become adjusted mostly to the forum and am less of a complete jerk by now. Don't worry, they've given me shock therapy and tamed me down to be as gentle as a puppy. I'm harmless now. HEEHEEE. (They were giving me 2000 volts a day and now the next woman I'm with will light up like a slot mahcine and pay off in silver dollars! --RP McMurphy, OFOTCN) I knowyou know that one, man.
I'm personally very glad to see you back, welcome back my friend.
Signed,

Hi guy's,another old member is making a return, sorry i've been AWOL for a bit but i have had a lot of personal stuff going on,but that's a story for another day !!!!!!!!!!!!
Firstly,CONGRATULATIONS to Keira and Peter on the news that you are going to be a Mummy & Daddy in November, thats a fantastic bit of news to return to. If it's a girl i reckon you should call her Jewel,it's the obvious choice,it's a lovely, unusual name, and it would be a cool name when she grows up.
I have popped into the forum a few times in the last few weeks, but not posted anything, but i have been keeping my eyes on the JKF news.
Hi Jones,(007),and all the gang,i've missed you all,and as i said, sorry for being distracted for a bit,but i am hoping to be a little more involved again on this fantastic forum.
All the best Keira, take care of yourself, and i look forward to hearing your progress with the baby.
Cheers guy's,its damned good to be home !!!!

thank Robbie!
Gary, We've discussed lots of names. We're pretty settled on the girls name though it's not Jewel. I think my family will think I've lost the plot altogether if I chose that. Though as much as I love Jewel and her music, I don't think the name works with our surname. Boys names are another thing. Haven't settled on any boys name yet. I'm still looking. Of course, when I get one I like, I put it to Peter and when he doesn't like it, there goes that name and it's back to looking again. We both have to like it. A lot of women just choose baby names regardless of what the father thinks. I'm not going to do that.
I really just wish this damned morning sickness would disappear.
I would recommend dramamine, but I'd check with your doctor before taking any pills.
I would also recommend Vincent but somehow I don't think that will work.
And Crawf, I am damend glad to see you back. With Gary back is great, because before he left, we were seemign to udnerstand weach otehr and hit it off.
But Crawf, I am thrilled to see you back.

Yeah using Jewel probly would make a few people roll their eyes ha ha I wouldnt do that either as much as I love Jewel... then you'd get so tired of yelling "JEWEL!!!!!!!!!!!!" it may taint the real Jewel Kilcher for you. ha!
Kiera did you say you weren't going to use celtic names? or did I dream that up? Anyways I can suggest the name of my best friend Kael, which is a celtic name and I think it's awesome. Actually I am beginning to think I might name my future son that if my wife approves. But we will see...

Kiera, are you going to have the Dr. tell you if it's a boy or a girl?? Just wondering, cause some people don't want to know with the first child, so it's a SURPRISE!! How exciting. Either way, he/she will have wonderful parents!! No doubt about that!

No we've decided to get a big surprise! I work in clothing and that includes baby clothing etc. I get access to a lot of free clothes, especially for babies and kids and so it would be easier for me to know whether we're having a boy or girl for that reason.
But that isn't enough for me. I'm just going to stock up on all the 'universal' colour stuff, white, green, cream, yellow. I'll be taking some boys and girls stuff too and whatever I don't use, I'll send to the charity shop. I've already gotten some lovely newborn clothes from work. They're all so cute that I can't wait to see my baby in them.

I would like to express this joy through this simple free verse poem for tomorrow you will see your bundle of joy, our first JKF baby This is for you, Kiera.
THIS IS MY SONG
BY :Greenpoet 05/02/2007
People spend a lifetime to find their dreams
But I won’t find the answers at the stars
I will chase the darkness and light you in my arms
I will cover you with my warm embraces
I will find you in every beat of your heart.
How I long to see your lovely smile
How I love to hold you in my arms
Your tiny hands to mine
Your head upon my shoulder
When you start to cry
I hear the melody coming inside of me
This is my song, my lullaby for you.
You’re a gift from heaven above
You’re closer to heaven
Listen to the magic in your heart
This is my song
You are my song
I found my dreams in you
And soon you will find the greatest love alive.

I really wish I could get pregnant. Yeah I know I'm a guy but I'm kind of jealous that women get to go through the joys of childbirth because it is such a beautiful thing. All men get is the 3 minutes of joy it took to make the baby. Well if we even last that long. Haha you probably all think I'm crazy now.
Little Bird
05-02-2007, 04:07 PM
In all honesty, I'm 99% fed up right now. The sickness and tiredness are really getting me down. You'd never want that....trust me. It is not what I thought it was going to be, at least...not yet anyway. I'm still waiting for it to get to the 'enjoyment' stage.
Don't get me wrong, I already love my unborn child to bits. I think I've loved this child for years already as I've been very broody for a very long time. But in saying that, I had this idealistic idea of pregnancy and even seen many friends and family go through it but in reality, you just haven't got a clue what it's like unless you're actually pregnant. I really am surprised.
I am just so fed up with being sick so much. I'm already 12 weeks and they say it's usually over by around now. I guess I'm just getting impatient.
Please God, Please let me get over all of this....like....yesterda!!! Pretty please?
kelane6
05-02-2007, 06:10 PM
The sickness I'm sorry to say can go the whole pregnancy. But it does become barable when you can also feel the baby moving inside of you. That was always the turning point for me even when I was uncomfortable those moments could turn it around. That is what you'll remember most when it's over. The same goes for the pain of childbirth. It sounds crazy but you forget most of the pain when you hear that first sound from your child, by the time their around 2 you start missing the baby things and if you don't watch it that's when the baby bug gets you again.

I know! I got loads of large ladies clothing yesterday to wear when I get my bump. They're gorgeous that I can't wait to wear them. Although, the company I work for don't do "maternity" clothes, the ones I got are fine though. They work as maternity clothes too. I'm already breaking out of a lot of my clothes so I'm looking for more loose fitting clothes.
It's a great perk though, absolutely. I'm lucky in that respect, definitely.
But by far, it's the baby clothes that I love. They're so adorable.

05-07-2007, 12:50 AM
perfectly fine
Not to be off topic for a moment. He actually is quite correct, it is an old style of German folk song, probably like the old drinking songs heard in Gasthause and such. The transliteration into Engilsh is correct as what he posted (Chris knows his German sehr gut, und also der Dialogue war ausgezeichnet, Ich habe das nich ins jahren gehort mit eine Amerikaner) but the transliteration is not what the actual meaning of the song is. I guess it can be taken as 'he is my baby, and if that isn't my baby, then he's not my baby'. It's got a different meaning in German, but Chris has every effort in his German speaking abilities.
But I liked the song, thank you Chris. I bet that German worked out well over in Germany. Dresden was it?
Anyway, back onto the subject, sorry. It was good to hear that you had some clothes plotted out for your newborn child, you probably can never have enough, though I'd stay away from white, with baby food stains 'n stuff! oh yes, I almsot forgot, order ibgger sizes, too, so that way you'll have a little of everything for the child to grow into later on. Just plan ahead, like me. I plan ahead so I don't have to do anything rght now.
I also like that you would donate the 'baby drag' clothes (ooooops! THAT WAS INTENDED TO BE COMICAL!) to charity, it shows integrity on your behalf, rather than trying to make money out of them. Glad to hear.

Christine, I thought of that but we've already agreed what a girl's second name will be so what we'll most likely do, is use Jewel as a second name if any of our future children our girls. If this one is a girl, then we have the first and second name already. It would be nice to use Jewel as a name though.

Kiera,i know you say you and Peter have kind of decided on a girls name already, but i have a cool suggestion for you,a name that suits both boys and girls, and has a very strong link with our beloved Jewel........
and the name is TAYLOR,the preferred guitar choice of Jewel as you all know, and its a fab name for a little lad,or a cute wee lassie,(that,s the Scottish bit coming out in me).
Let me know what you think of it please ,i think it would be a great comprimise, and it still includes the Jewel aspect which is obviously a massive, and passionate part of your life.
Anyway,i hope you are keeping well, take care.

Taylor is a great name. I really like that. I put it to my husband though and he doesn't like it. Nothing against American names but he's not a fan of them. It is an unusual name here though. Not many Taylor's around.
It doesn't really go with our surname either but I still would have added it to the possible list.

VERY COOL!!! I really just kinda threw that out there, so I'm surprised (& elated!) that you're seriously considering it as a middle name of your future little girl!! Let's see. Amber Jewel. Taylor Jewel. Kiera Jewel??? Brianna Jewel.......the possibilities are endless!! I think 'Jewel' as a middle name will work with almost every first name, don't you?? Some people at work have taken to calling me Preggers, which I hate. Generally, my nickname here is Shakira (because some people have no imagination!) but I'm trying to get them out of the 'Preggers' habit and back into the 'Shakira' habit even though I don't like either nickname, I can just tolerate the 'Sharkira' one more so.
I think using 'Juel' as a variation would work, because it is somewhat arguably original. Crawf, love that idea of 'Taylor'. GREAT NAME! For a boy or girl. I'll admit, you know your names.
It could be MUCH worse nicknames. SHakira is a bit odd, being that you aren't of Hispanic decent, but okay. With all my illustrious aliases used around the world for me, then I have to keep up with the nicknames. "Bro" to the brother, nothing like family. 'Squeak' to my buddies. 'Sonny' to my off site buddies. "Angus" to the estranged friend Mohammed. Not mentioning the other names, "Vincent Cipriani", "Jonathan Magdelane", "Fernando Juarez Costas", "Sebastian Cornwallis", "Alehandros Gatto", "Mitch Beech"....trust me, 'Preggers' isn't too bad. Try keeping upo with all those. I have trouble keeping up with who I am some days until someone calls my name. ZIt's like "oh, that's me! Yeah?"
As for your wonderful nickname, consider it temporary. And hey, if they won't stop, remember you've only got eight months left of it, it's not hat bad.
Best thing for you to do honestly is stay away from nicknames in the first place. Just have your coworkers call you by 'Kiera', because all of those other names will only get you confused. I swear some days I can't remember who I am.
Little Bird
05-10-2007, 08:08 AM
Actually, Juel is the correct way to spell her name. She changed it to Jewel, probably because it's a bit more commercially friendly spelling.
The Shakira thing comes from the fact that my name is Kiera so the lads in here, just put Sha before my name. Sha-Kiera. The 'Kira' part is pronounced exactly the same as my name just spelt slighty differently. Get it now?
Oh and you'll need to do your maths a bit better - I have 6 months left (only 5 in work though)
Besides, I like having a nickname. I am actually the only girl in here with one. I feel quite privileged, even if it isn't the best of nicknames.

Here in my mind, I've been thinking it's pronounced 'Kee-ERRA' (rhymes with Sierra). I guess that's what my American mind is telling me. When it's really 'KEEE-Ra'...... I guess that's how the British actress, Kiera Knightly (or is it spelled 'Keira'??), would pronounce her name too?? Because here in the US they say it just like I mentioned above, 'Kee-ERRA', as in rhymes with Sierra.
I had thought I always read that Jewel's given name was really spelled 'J-E-W-E-L' but she played around with the spelling in school a bit and came up with variations like 'Jule' and 'Juel'....Somewhere I saw some school papers of hers where she spells it 'Jule' or 'Juel'.
I guess I understood it to be the opposite of what you said, Kiera.

Congrats! Wonder what kind of baby she'll be: the loner/wanderer (like me), the crybaby attention-seeker (my sister) or the clingy mama's girl (like my youngest sister)!
I like classic feminine names; I'm not big on the those trendy new age ones like Madison, Dakota, Sparkles and Harmonica.
Anyway- I like the names Ella, Lucy, Maureen, Jane, Vivian, Ruby, Margaret/Maggie, Dinah, Jasmine, Lou, Mary, Lena/Lina and Rose/Rosa/Rosita for girls. What do you think?
Whatever you name her, keep in mind the world doesn't need anymore Brittanys, Ashleys, Lindsays, Ambers or Tiffanys. It's up to you of course...I just love discussing names:D!
Melinda, I actually like the names you've provided. Kiera, you should take a look at these, great ideas!
Lucy, Maureen, Vivian, DInah (I'm assuming 'Shore'), Rose (although 'Rosalyn' is nicer. Not Rosie, though.
Melinda has some good names here, check 'em out. And if I ever catch anyone naming their child 'Harmonica', it's on!
I can't really pick girls names, but I think boy's names like Todd, Clark, Willem, Nathaniel/Nathan, Geoffrey, or Jonathan would serve as universal but somewhat unique.
Don't take naming advise from me, though. If I ever have a boy, his name wil be 'Kentucky', or 'Ky' for short! Like I said, ask Melinda, shhe seems to have her head about her with the whole naming thing.

Thanks! We don't actually know if we're having a boy or girl. We'll wait for the big day for that one. I'd like the surprise for this one. If we're lucky enough to be blessed with more children in the future then maybe we'll sneak in a bit early to find out but for now...it's a mystery!

Well good, nice to see that someone hasn't lost their sanity when it comes to taste in names.;)
Lost my sanity? what are you trying to say? Oh, names. Well, I can say that's true. I haven't lost my sanity when it comes to names.
To quote Paul Simon, 'Still crazy after all these years, but I would not be convicted by a jury of my peers.'
Did you know that the definition of 'insanity' is conducting the same controlled experiment repeatedly fully expecting and anticiptating a completely different outcome? That is the definition of insanity. So, I guess with all the teenie bopper names like Brittney and Ashlee and all that falls perfectly into fit with your statement, Melinda. Good call.
So, I agree that utilizing 'old school' timeless names like the ones mentioned above should bring life back into this mundane teenie bopper soceital rut we're in. Good call, Melinda Mae!

LOL, as long as it aint Ethel, Barbara, Gretna, Cybil or Muriel
But...i DO presume your refering to names of old, such as Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Amelia blah blah blah etc!!! nice names those!
Anyway...........i'm insane!
Hey, what's wrong with Muriel, and Barbara isn't too bad. I've met plenty of good looking girls named Barbara.
But Ethel is out of the question, no doubt.

Eh...not a big fan of those names.

Not really actually. They're a bit too 'normal' for my taste. Lovely names of course and very British, if I might say so. Not a lot of Elizabeth's or Charlotte's over here I'm sure you can imagine but I prefer more unusual, rare and more meaningful names.
We finally found a boys name we liked. It's quite special actually so I'm saying nothing until the baby is born. Then I'll reveal both names. Of course we'll pick the relevant name depending on if we have a boy or girl.
Not knowing whether we'll have a boy or girl is going to be a nice surprise for everyone, including Peter and me but for everyone else, the name will also be a surprise.
Just 6 more months to go and you'll all know!
Hey - by the way, started getting my bump now. It's noticeable and we've taken some photos. We took one on the 14th April and another one the other day, 14th May and there is a distinct bump now. But I knew that anyway because my clothes no longer fit. I've taken to keeping the top buttons open and keeping my jeans and trouser up with belts. It's quite funny actually. Just not at the stage where I need proper maternity wear yet but I am not far from it though.

Well we had the second scan today and thankfully, everything looks fine. No problems found.
It was brilliant, we saw all four chambers of the heart beating away strong and well. We also saw the stomach and bladder and kidneys. At one point, we saw our baby open and close the left hand a couple of times. And we saw our baby's face from the front. Still looks like any other baby right now. Hard to tell if the baby looks like Peter or me but I suppose we'll find that out in a few more months time. It was very special and you couldn't get the grins off our faces all day!
Here's a pic of todays scan. Hope you can make it out.

Kiera did they give u the option to do one of those 3d ultrasounds?
Little Bird
07-12-2007, 08:03 AM
They only do 3D scans in private clinics here. You have to book and pay for them yourself. Insurance doesn't cover it and it's a bit expensive.
I will get less than half pay when I'm on maternity leave so everything will be extremely tight for the 7 months that I'm off. We're trying to save what we can now where possible so we decided not to go with the 3D scan.
Besides, a lot of the time, I think most of the babies look a bit weird. Some don't. Some look adorable but I don't want to run the risk of seeing my baby in a 3D scan and thinking the baby looks weird. It would just freak me out. The ultrasound showed us all we needed to see, even our little baby's face.

I can't imagine what it must be like to carry life inside of my guts..... *afraid* But if you want some fun names try Agenda, Clutch, Tilly or Tillia (not a good middle name if the first name is Jenna though), Bella, and Luna for a girl. Cabin, Elwood, Shanyn, Sean, Tray, or Star for a boy. Wow, I might be a hippy, but Tilly O'Toole sounds like a really good name, or at least it's fun to say.
Little Bird
07-13-2007, 08:14 AM
I love the name Luna but it doesn't go well with my surname (married name). But we have our girls name already. We really need to settle on a boys name. I keep getting vibes lately of a boy but I am not the type to rely on that when it comes to babies. I have good instincts that way but I haven't always been right with others who are having kids. Suppose I'm just being cautious. Though without thinking, I keep saying 'him' and 'he'.

This is just so amazing, Kiera!!!! I'm so happy for the 3 of you!!!! (mom, dad, and baby!)
You know, I've always heard that when a woman is carrying "low", it means they will have a boy. Maybe there's some truth to this???? Don't know, but just something to think about.
Little Bird
07-13-2007, 03:31 PM
I have heard all sorts of tales like that too but I keep hearing opposites and seeing contradictions to whatever is said. If you're all bump then it's a boy, if you put weight on all over, it's a girl. Then I hear the opposite and then see complete contradictions.
Everyone kept saying to my sister that she had a lovely neat bump and therefore she was having a boy. But she ended up having a girl. She was just bump and very neat and tidy. She didn't put any weight on anywhere else on her body and I've been lucky enough to be the same.
Scientifically, I can't see how the shape of the bump or position of the bump reflects the sex of the baby. All urban myths I think. it would be interesting to see a survey done though to see what the majority would be. Perhaps I'm too scientific about the whole thing. LOL. :)
The newest one I heard was if you have loads of heartburn, the baby will have lots of hair. Again, I have no idea how this could scientifically be proven or what would cause that to happen. My mum didn't really have any heartburn on us and we were all born with hair. I have terrible heartburn but it's easily remedied with some Rennie or Gaviscon which is safe to take so I don't complain. But if the myth were true...I'll be giving birth to Sideshow Bob. LOL!

hahaha sideshow bob. That's funny. I love the urban myths that surround pregnancy and childbirth. My friend Larissa didn't have any heartburn during pregnancy and her kid was born with a lot of hair. So Kiera how did you break the news to your parents and everyone. My friend Larissa told me when we were driving one day and goofing around and she said my sister is going to be an aunt. It took me like 5 minutes to put it together. Haha

Well my dad worked it out! Believe it or not. I was only about 5 weeks gone at that stage. I don't know how he worked it out that early because I had no symptoms then but he did. I then had lunch with my mum a couple of days later and told her. Both of my parents were overjoyed. I then waited a couple of weeks to tell my family but advised them not to tell anyone until I said so.
I told my boss and all my friends when I was about 12 weeks which is the norm. I waited til I saw the ultrasound and then was given the all clear. Then I just couldn't contain my joy.
When I told my sister, I said 'Faye is going to have a new little cousin'. But I just blatantly just came out and told everyone else. The funny thing was about telling my sister, is that Faye picked me up wrong and gave my sister a big hug thinking it was my sister having the baby. She thought she was going to have a sister or brother and not a cousin. It was funny for a few minutes having to explain it to her. She gets it now.
A few weeks ago, when I went over there, Faye saw my growing bump and said - "Have you not had the baby yet?" She's already getting impatient. LOL
Put a hundred pounds on red, Marco! I've seen a guy in a private London casino drop a hundred pounds on red at the side of the dealer's position and won 4 times in a row, lost one hundred on the fifth spin, but walked away happy with 500 pounds in three minutes!
Red always wins, baby! Put a hunny on red!
