In what ways has Jewel affected your life? Experiences where her lyrics helped you through a rough time in your life? Or maybe she has inspired you to better yourself? Has she inspired you to start playing the guitar or write songs? Stuff like this... let's share stories and discuss:friends:
Now that's sweet. I didn't know you had such a soft side, pal. The musical artist known as Jewel has not changed my life, however, I ask you this question to spike your imagination:
WIll she pay your rent? SHe may be a great musiian, but not a saint.\

I think Gary was just looking for ways that you have found her lyrics or work or even own philanthropy inspirational for your own life. I don't know that anyone here expects Jewel to help them in a bind.
As for me, I think when I was younger she was more inspirational, although it wasn't direct. I really like the idea behind Project Clearwater and I've really started to hound my friends that drink bottled water. I know it's not completely related, but it's absurd that people don't trust the water that comes from their tap enough to drink it. That's something we shouldn't settle for.
One of my favorite stories is the one Jewel told before singing Amen (http://www.jewelwiki.com/pmwiki.php?n=Songs.Amen) on the Rocks the Paradise Angelfood:
I can't believe this is my life! I want to thank you all for being here. I used to live in my car and think that I would have to steal toilet paper for the rest of my life. And it's because you guys buy my CD and the station plays me that I get to do this, so thank you guys. It's amazing how much my life has changed, you know, it used to be so simple. I was raised in Alaska, and I was living in my car. My life has changed so much as lawyers and agents and contracts and sometimes it gets really overwhelming and a little dis-heartening. But it's really the internet and the contact with you guys, the fan letters that really keeps me going. I once had this hotline you could call to find out where I was playing and you could leave messages on it. And I was feeling really bummed out and I called up this hotline. And there was this kid on the phone and he goes, "Uh, hey, Jewel, I'm not going to tell you my name because you probably won't remember me, but umm..anyway I've been locked up in my house for six days..." and I'm thinking, oh god, who is this guy? He's like, "I'm trying to kick heroin. Anyway, I've been in here for six days and I just keep listening to your song Amen over and over and I keep telling myself your flesh isn't hell, my flesh isn't hell." And so I wanted to dedicate this song to him, if he ever hears it.

Well, since Jewel ain't paying my rent for me, I guess I'll have to come up with some other reason why I might like her......
Oh yeah, her rags to riches story. She's an inspiration for all who came from nothing in the middle of nowhere to someone who's highly respected & talented. I think that reason alone is enough to say how she's affected my life. She gives me hope!!
(Btw, I came from nothing in the middle of nowhere like Jewel, only instead of using a hose to get water into our house we used to haul it in the back of a pickup to a well behind our house....) We didn't have a shower, just an old circa 1930's iron bathtub. I didn't learn how to use a shower until I was 17 or 18. This was only a little over 10 years ago in the Midwest...

Now that's sweet. I didn't know you had such a soft side, pal. The musical artist known as Jewel has not changed my life, however, I ask you this question to spike your imagination:
If you were lucky enough to meet Jewel today, would she pay your rent? "NO, SHE WOULD NOT!" (NO other way to misspell that one, sport!) If you were in a bind, would Jewel help save your soul, or your hind quarters? NO, so why would you ask a question like that. She won't pay your rent; she's a musician that simply sings songs for our entertainment. So why would you try and change your life and give her the credit?! She’s not a saint, she's a human being like most of us are.

While I read Chasing Down the Dawn, I was very inspired by the way Jewel took control of her life, her dreams, and her future. Anytime I ever felt overwhelmed by the enormity of my dreams and desires, I remembered how Jewel was able to accomplish what she did by breaking down these huge ideas into small attainable goals. So... thats what I did. I started out volunteering and that led to knowledge and skills, which led to a part-time job, which led to a full time job, which led to me being able to buy my horse... you get the idea. :)

When I read Jewel's poems, I saw her.
WHen I listened to her music, I felt her.
When I watched her performed, I liked her.
When I heard her in interviews, I knew her.
Her lines are powerlines.
Her songs are echoes of the heart.
Her moves are enchanting.
Her voice is sweet but sometimes not.
I don't know what , when or where,
I finally decided that I like her a lot.
I remember the moment, I read her poem
It melted me like a dewdrop in the rainforest
You'll have to excuse my negative bravado, coming from a man who has no real interaction with them, I don't know much about it.
Off my soapbox.

i dunno i cant really say Jewel has affected my life at all. I just really enjoy her music and watching her perform but thats pretty much it. Dont get me wrong, Jewel definitely has inspired alot of people with her struggles to fame but there are also a ton of artists with a rough background too. i gotta agree with Jones though, at the end of the day Jewel is just a human being. Hope yall dont take this the wrong way because despite wat i just said i still really like Jewel.

I can relate almost everything to some Jewel song or another. She has just helped me be more open and kinder to everyone including myself. I just feel at ease with her music.
FUNNY POST! Was it something I said?

I anticipate this thread taking a downward turn and I don't think any of us want that. I believe the topic is :
How has Jewel affected your life?
Okay, you're right, Kiera, back to the quesiton in hand.
I read jewel's book ANWA, and it changed my humanity, my course of thinking. It promoted, along with her music, to have civil lrights for all and to belileve in most accuracy, that we are all human (ten fingers, ten toes, n all). That is it's impact.

Well, I wouldn't really say that my life has been dramatically affected by Jewel's music to degree of some of the members on the forum. It is something the girls and I like to listen to together as we are driving and it is cool to hear them singing along to it, and alot of her lyrics put into words thoughts I have had for some time...so I guess it is inspiring in a poetic sense.

this simple quote alone has affected my life and it comes into my head at times when my human nature wants me to be selfish or worse..
"We must demand not more from each other, but more from ourselves."

I thought of posting this once again as i feel it's related to this thread.
From the thread:
"How Did you get Introduced" By: bluediamond (http://www.jewelkilcherforum.com/showthread.php?p=6992#post6992)
I posted this on: 10-29-2005, 03:25 AM
(This is a long story, be patient on reading it)
Back in 1996, i was still in my first year college, the Philippines was busy listening to grunge music, NIRVANA et al.... I was hook with a song called "RUNAWAY TRAIN" by Soul Asylum (I still do listen to it once in a while up to now). It was also then that i started collecting records (cassette tapes in particular) as you know, I am living in a third world country, Cd's were introduced to us far behind, so things which are in with you comes later with us.
That same year, I remember the saleslady from Tower Records recommending me "Pieces of You' tape (the first ever released), it has Grammy Nominee sticker on the cover which was of course impressive, so i got it, i listened to it, once, twice, but that was it. Years had past, Spirit came, i didn't buy a copy though it had a big promotion over here, Jewel became MTV-ASIA Artist of the Month (May 1999), but i wasn't paying much attention of JEWEL yet.
Not untill i had listened to "WWSYS" (vh1-storyteller-live version). You know that VH1-Storyteller compillation album.Wow! that version blew me away. I found myself hook on that song, i played it a billion times, and told my friends about that song.
It was around year 2000, when Jewel took a break I began to fall in love with her music. So then, i took away POY album from my collection and put it in a very special place, then i started collecting Jewel stuff. The happiest and most rewarded was when i got "A LIFE UNCOMMON-DVD", i didn't attend my classes for a week and locked myself in my room, bought everything i needed, food, water and everything, for 1 week i was watching that DVD, every second, i never got tired of watching it and not still up to this moment.... Now, JEWEL has become a big part of my life. For me "SHE'S THE GREATEST", "THE BEST", and
my LIFE will never be complete without her music.
I have all her 5 CD's, 5 DVD's, and more unreleased stuff.
But i've never seen her live.
She hasn't been in our country,
but I'm still hoping she will visit the Philippines soon.
To all the co-members who had seen her live,
you know your stories of watching her live,
of seeing Jewel in person, makes me smile ...
It makes me happy as if I was also there.
But, what makes my life more special now,
---is that knowing I'm not the only person in the world ,
who believes that,
this GREAT ARTIST MUSIC deserves to be heard by the rest of the world.
I JEWEL FOREVER!!!

What's with Jewel that made me really want her? I don't know, I still am wondering all this time. Well, what I know she stirs me up. There is something inside of me, that responded. I write poems so naturally, I don't know how, when and where it started. Maybe its been there just standing still inside me. But when I read and heard Jewel's music and insights, it just gave me an inspiration, that is why I call her my muse. What a lovely muse personified.:)

Yeah I agree until Jewel entered my life, I had no poetic drive or anything. And now I feel like I can express myself through poetry, whether it's good or not, it's easier for me now to just let all the abstract thoughts flow from my mind onto paper. So that's another impact Jewel has somewhat had on me..

Me too ! Listening to her songs and reading some of her poems in the last few months has really inspired me to write more poetry than novels (not that I'm a great writer!).
When I discovered Jewel my English was not very good (a few months at school!) and her voice was the first thing that moved me. Even if I found at that time that she had the same voice as Tori Amos...well , maybe that's why I like both singers so much. It's that kind of voice... Yeah , "Foolish games" moved me a lot just with the voice and it(discovering Jewel) definitely opened a new chapter in my perception of music and writing.

I guess in some ways I've become an even more deep thinker since I've really delved into her music. Also, I'm going to learn guitar too because of her inspiration. I'd just like to learn a few songs and play them once in awhile. I also like some country music, so I could learn all my favorites and maybe even come up with some of my own! :-)
