View Full Version : 7 albums you could not live without

I've been wanting to ask the question, 'what are 5 albums you could not live without', but I thought 5 was a low number, so then I thought ok, 10 albums.... but 10 seemed sort of high... so I decided on 7. Can you choose 7 albums by any artist that you just love so much you could not live without?? Or I could word it like "if you were stranded on a desert island, what 7 albums would you have with you?"

I can't get enough of Ciega, Sordomuda. I was having spasms when I saw Shakira at Madison Square Garden over the summer and she performed it. Yes she is VERY underestimated as an artist, but only here in teh States. Her intelligence isn't noticed at all it's all about the belly dancing and she is MUCH more than that.

I know I will just kidnap Jewel and her Guitar and she will be my music

Yes, and even here they only see her as a pop star but really she's not just a pop star. Her lyrics are really meaningful and well just the fact that so many people listen to her and don't even know what she's saying means that she has huge talent. (I think I like the spanish albums better than the english) And I also think it's hard to classify her, it's not really pop, not really rock, it is latin but more than that, it's not just dance music.... what is it? Good music.

Ok, I've really had to think about this. I wasn't even going to post here, but thought I probably should now!! :-) I'm going for 10 though...
These aren't in any particular order:
1. Very Best of Faith Hill: There You'll Be
2. This Way: Jewel
3. GAIW: Jewel
4. Twice The Speed Of Life: Sugarland
5. Fireflies: Faith Hill
6. Real Fine Place: Sara Evans
7. Greatest Hits: U2
8. Cry: Faith Hill
9. Greatest Hits: Martina McBride
10. Garth Brooks: Boxed Set
OK....11.
11.Dizzy Up The Girl: GooGoo Dolls
HMMMMM.....Only seven, well here goes.
Jewel-Pieces of You
Jewel-GAIW
Lynard Skynard-Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd (1974) (Free Bird!)
Goo Goo Dolls-Iris (arguably one of the best songs ever writte by an artist other than Jewel, becasue you know Jewel writes only the best, but this song "Iris", takes second place.)
Master and Commander Motion Picture SOundtrack
Jimmy Buffett "Don't know the title, but it's his largest selling album of nothing but beach music, come on, we're on an island.)
Garth Brooks-Sevens (Hey, gotta have "Two Pina Coladas whilst on the island).
That about sums it up for me. However, I do like the Ass' idea of kidnapping Jewel, but I think if I did that, it would be 'coercion into coming to the island', not kidnaping, that's too harsh. She'd hate me and wouldn't play(pun on words).

:) Just 7?!:MECRY[1]:Well ok...
1) Pieces Of You (Jewel):acoustic:
2) 1933-1945 (The Spirits Of Rhythm)
3) Birth Of The Hot (Jelly Roll Morton):jazzman:
4) The Very Best of Fats Waller (Fats Waller)
5) Achtung Baby (U2):dazzler1:
6) Legend (Bob Marley)
7) The Ultimate Otis Redding (Otis Redding)
HMMMMM.....Only seven, well here goes.
Jimmy Buffett "Don't know the title, but it's his largest selling album of nothing but beach music, come on, we're on an island.)
Garth Brooks-Sevens (Hey, gotta have "Two Pina Coladas whilst on the island).
:) Hey...what a coincidence- I've been listening to Jimmy Buffett and Garth's Sevens all winter...since I've got the winter blues. I made a country beach mix that includes a lot of Jimmy Buffett, Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney's stuff, who also has a bunch of great island songs. My mix also has some songs by other artists like Blake Shelton's "Some Beach Somewhere" . And I just like you also dig Skynard.:yammer:
Hey, here's a girl who knows her non-Jewel music.
1933-1945 big band jump, never expected to hear that on this forum. Kudos.
Sorry, but the very best of Fats Waller, only the last half of that is the best, I have the same album, never liked the first few songs too much.
Legend, by Bob marley. I just want to write that again, Legend, by Bob Marley. HEre's true Jamaican reggae music with a twist, Marley knew his stuff in and out, and could sing one song to make you cry, and that next song on the album would have you up and dancing.
Otis Redding, come on, who didn't play repeat "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay" a thousand times when they were a teenager! I know I did. Great, Great musician.
Can I also metnion AL Green, a man whoh every song he sings turns from paper notes to golden harmony, even if only for a moment. Al Green, one of the greats. had all of his allbums growing up, but lost them after my fathehr died, could carry them with me, was too concerned about clthes and sentimental goods at the time.
Yes, Skynard is also good. But, if you like Otis Redding, you should check out Percy Sledge. Ole Percy would sing a song that would melt your heart. Percy was the king of '60's soul, soul dripped off of him.
If you like Otis Redding, don't leave the record store until you get a cheap Percy SLedge album, they aren't much, starting around six bucks, but well worth it. I always say to people who like either soul or oldies or whatever it is, if they've never heard Percy Sledge, they can even talk to me about true soul music.

You're cool...I was surprised that anyone would share my taste in music let alone know any of those people were. Yeah, I like Percy Sledge. But Spirits of Rhythm aren't big-band, they're jazz though. They're a combo of jazz, country, blues and folk- they're TOPS and there's no one else like them...IMO.

ok since this topic is going into metal, I am curious have you ever listened to Blind Guardian? I am just now starting to get into metal and I am really loving Blind Guardian right now, even though I guess "power metal" is supposed to be "not real metal" or something according to some people.
And Marc I borrowed this Opeth cd called "Morningrise" from my friend and I really like it, I love how they go from one extreme to the other. You know like heavy heavy straight into acoustic, it's awesome.

Well to answer your question Kiera, i'd just have to chuck in Led Zeppelin II its got some great classics on there like Moby Dick & Ramble On many rate IV as there finest...but i beg to differ, its only because it has Stairway To Heaven on it :acoustic:
Also Megadeth - Rust In Peace technically a thrash masterpeice with impeccable guitar skill and genius!!!
...finaly and last but not least i'd put it all to rest as Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced could not get by in life without that album...I always say, that when the sun shines Jimi is playing his guitar!
And Marc I borrowed this Opeth cd called "Morningrise" from my friend and I really like it, I love how they go from one extreme to the other. You know like heavy heavy straight into acoustic, it's awesome.
ooooh Gary you the main mang! Opeth - Morningrise is an excellent album, and your right, the diverse complexity of there music is unlike no other, Progessive rock/metal at its finest....if you like that one...you SHOULD giz yer hands on there follow up 'My Arms Your Hearse' that is my 2nd fav one of theres after 'Still Life'.
Blind Guardian tho, not my cup of tea really...never been into power metal as such, although i hear there 'Nightfall Over Middle Earth' is one to buy as a fan ;) my Chums listen to bands like them, such as 'Rhapsody', 'Stratovarius'....and a good friend of mine Gian Pyras ex Cradle Of Filth has recently joined the band called 'Dragonlord' touring purposes only tho, check em all out to your hearts content my good man by all means, you may just like one of them.

I will definately check into some of these. My friend is a definate metal-head so I know he will know exactly about all of those you just mentioned. He may even have the other Opeth albums, I will see.
Yeah I didn't think you'd be too much into the power metal stuff but I figured I'd ask. I am just really loving the 'Twist in the Myth' album from Blind Guardian.

Yes indeed...Meanwhile back at the ranch (back on topic) :p hehe
How in the life of me could i ever forget Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses the album itself is Gothic rock in its finest form...and the track 'Bloody Kisses' has the very essence of gothic SEXual darkness you could ever need for a vampiric ode...if yer ever out on a friday or saturday night and yer get off with this hot draculina goth goddess beeeauty, and you want to get frisky with her, play 'Bloody Kisses' and she'll out of her kit and eeeer :censored: ....well just imagine lol  and Virgin Black - Elegant... and Dying...' A dark opera, a classical doom touched epic masterpiece, gorgeous composition from the innovative gods!
You'de like this one Gary, especialy if you liked Opeth - Morningrise surely you would!?
Trouble is with all this, is that a top 7 is never enough, then a top 10 aint either...not even a top 20 would be!!!! Maybe i should create a 'Favourable Album Of The Week' thread :dunno:

Actualy Gary...i surprise myself in liking them rather alot, as i'v never heard of them before ever...until now! "Cheers"
I think what it is, is that i 'phased' out of the American Black/Death metal scene many years ago...and just never kept in touch, but thanks to myspace...which has really opened my eyes or more like ears to the US metal scene, and swathed me in a new form of inner Darkness.
Ask him if he likes the Norse band called 'Forgotten Woods' ...the frontman 'Ravn' is now part of '1349' he should have heard of em
