Instrumental music is/has been my life!

I REALLY wish I could play guitar........:acoustic: It's quite a bit "cooler" than what I do play...

But I'm a heck of a clarinet & saxophone player!! I've been playing since I was 8 years old (I'm 30 now) and got a music performance scholarship for college. I can also play piano too. At one point I wanted to be an instrumental music teacher, but decided to go the science/biology route. Now I'm a lab scientist. Music is just a hobby...I wish I had more time to play &/or even audition for the symphony here where I live.

I am a member of Kappa Kappa Psi. http://www.kkpsi.org/

I can sing too...but nowhere near as well as Jewel! I was in choirs growing up & in college. Now I simply sing in my car!:)

When I was younger, I remember *attempting* to write songs. I was maybe 10 or 11 and I'd go outside with my pen & paper. I'd sit in the grass out on the farm and allowed myself to be inspired by the beauty of the country around me. I had aspirations of being a professional musician then.I'm not sure what happened to those songs...I may have to dig them out one of these days. Otherwise, I'm not really a songwriter at all...that was the last time I tried to write a song.

Im not a musician, but i've got music in my heart and I can sing.I do collaborate with my singer-composer friend with her songs lately especially the lyrics thing. But I can strum the guitar but not quite good enough. If only I have all the time in the world, I want to learn to play the piano-organ.:)

MCRIO, if you say, you can play and write your songs, have you ever compose for Jewel? Just wonderin? :)

Hm composing for Jewel,.. not directly because its very hard that jewel would get the songs from me, because i do not know how they should came from austria to amerika ^^. My biggest dream is to go to a jewelconcert when im older, when i can fly to usa. And then to talk a few words with her in the backstagearea and give her a cd + gift from me (^^ just a biiig dream). My "liefdream" is to make my hobby to my work - the music, songwriting. because there are enough songwriters in the background that writes for another singers.

Cool thing with the clarinet & saxophon! Never give it up! Its very hard to make your biggest hobby (music) to your job. its so sad. That would be cool and very interesting what youve written when you was 10,11 years old.

I used to play the electric guitar back when I was in middle school. This was a very short period, I just grew tired of taking lessons, I just wanted to be good at playing right then and it wasn't happening fast enough. Plus my fingers were getting all torn up from sliding them all around the strings and it hurt... so I gave it up and then a few years later I made the mistake of giving my guitar away to my friend's sister who wanted to learn how to play :( Now I want to learn again, but honestly now I'd rather have an acoustic than electric. But I'd still like to have my guitar back :(
I wonder how rude or weird it would be to ask for it back. The thing is she never even tried to use the guitar, I think it is in a closet somewhere..
However she married a guy who is a guitar player so maybe he uses it... I guess I'll have to inquire about it to my friend....

I play the guitar but I'm not great at it. I used to play guitar for my old school. I'd play with my friend Kate in masses and plays etc. Wish I was better but I'm really out of practice.

I play the guitar too, just at home for myself,or if we have a wee get - together after the pub,i will play the guitar and we will all have a bit of a sing-song.I am certainly not brilliant,i'm pretty decent, but i would love to be able to devote more time to improve though.
I'm not too bad a singer,(i think),but i would'nt give up my day job,if you get what i mean !!!
I have a friend in a band and he is a genius guitarist, electric and acoustic, plays the harmonica, and he has the most amazing voice into the bargain. His band have mad 2 CD's now,and i go to watch him play live as much as possible.
I would love to have the talent that he has with a guitar, its brilliant to watch.
By the way,the Saxaphone that was mentioned earlier is a fantastic instrument, your very lucky to be good a player, well done, keep it up,and it is a very cool instrument indeed !!!
Cheers Crawfy !!!

Well then I suppose if we are considering instruments, I suppose I should mention that I also play the recorder and tin whistle but my best (though not brilliant) instrument is my voice. I was in a choir for years. I'm not as good as I used to be as I no longer keep my breathing and vocal chords well oiled and practiced as I used to

I was in chorus when I was in middle school for 2 years, that was long ago but I do think I can sing pretty well if I actually try to sing RIGHT. In front of other people I won't sing right b/c I feel akward. I feel more comfortable in a group singing, but maybe if I can play the guitar, the singing solo will just come to me...

I want to add that I wish I could play the harmonica, I have tremendous respect for anyone who can play it and make it sound good

Little Bird

I'm the same. I'm very uncomfortable singing on my own to a group though when I played the guitar at the same time, it was a lot easier.

I was lucky to have been a soprano in a multi award winning choir. I had to sing well or I wouldn't have been allowed to stay in. Like you Gary, I could sing no problem in the choir but I just can't do it in front of people. I feel very self conscious.

I remember in high school I was selected to sing a few solos, but I was SO NERVOUS I just about threw up!! I thought it was much easier to play clarinet or sax than singing too.

ItBeThatWay27
01-20-2007, 01:52 AM
even though it was in 7th and 8th grade when I was in chorus, to audition you had to sing solo in front of the whole class and I was so nervous. I sang Unchained Melody ha ha most of the class sang that song b/c it was easy and the whole class had sung it at one point... but yeah Christie I felt like throwing up as well..

i try...

the saxophone has to be the sexiest instrument ever, i've always wanted to play, but i haven't got enough puff.
Hmm my boyfriend plays guitar and loves to try various other instruments, namely the didgeridoo- does anyone have any tips for circular breathing?

Well, I played the Mallets in band, but my Sister is in collage to be a music teacher. She taught me how to play the clarinet (Her major) the piano, and the Trombone.

You all are gonna laugh at this, but it's true. I play funny Civil War instruments, like the Jaw Harp! I am a Civil War historian, like a reenactor.

You all are gonna laugh at this, but it's true. I used to be a Civil War Union Cavalry reenactor, and can play a few Civil War era instruments. They aren't hard, like the fiddle (which is basically a recorder for children, just it's for adults and n longer made), the jaw harp, which sounds distinctly odd. You'd know it if you heard it. I also play (oh the talent!) harmonica. All of my music was gearing towards playing Civil War era music for a Civil War historian. Corny, yes, but it's also reqarding knowing that I'm the only guy on this forum that can play a jaw harp?!
I never got the whole Civil War reenactment thing though I completely respect it. It's great that you managed to learn some rarely played instruments.

Every year in Aug I go up to the Blue Ridge Mt. in Virginia and ride my motorcycle in the back roads,so one afternoon I came upon this civil war battle thing,it was pretty cool, every one was stuck in some time passage the clothes even the talk was of the era. Some guy would not break charector.hung out got some stew and bread told them what I did for work became hit with the old timers, Got on my steel horse and rode away....

It's okay, Kiera, most people don't get it. But, I am a history major in college, studying emphasis on U.S. Civil War and reconstruction periods, with a History minor in Anglo-British history. Yep, rivetting stuff, so exciting! I'll give you a true but brief knowledge of what it's like.the truth of he Civil War soldier, and as hard as it can be sometimes is truly exciting to learn about, I'm darned proud to be portraying a soldier of this war that claimed on of my ancestors.

It is worth doing it, though. Just to see how our great great grandparents lived. It sounds like a sob story, butI rather enjoy it, being that I've eaten worse than spoiled meat or hardtack biscuits.

Anyway, that's the hardcore version of Civil War reenacting. Fun, not really, but worth it, YES!

I don't get your comment, what do you mean by that? If it's the fact that it is a war that's already happened, I understadn that, but, you must check your mirrors every once in a while. history forgottten will repeat itself. Take my word on this, I just got done writing a 15K history thesis based on proving thhat fact. You'll thank yourself to check the mrrors once in a while. Trust me on this one.

Back to topic: I think I'm gonna buy a guitar and teach myself!! I've got the instrumental music background, and I'm confident I can do it. Anyone have any ideas on a good "starter" acoustic guitar?? Thanks to the guitar players here who comment....

Well, now that you all have insisted on staying on topic, the first guitar I learned on was a Washburn. They're inexpensive and they work well for a starter. But, I'm going to tell you right now, your fingers will be SORE after your done playing for an hour. best thing to do is use your direct fingertip, not the meaty mass of the finger, you'll thank me later on.

In all modesty, I'm a darn good vocalist. I love singing jazz and country, and can do impressions of Ella Fitzgerald, Dorothy & Vivian Dandridge, Patsy Cline, Jo Stafford and Victoria Spivey.

I'm a mediocre guitar player at best- but it's good therapy and I'm gradually getting better. But unlike Jewel, I sing better in private.

I can also play Jingle Bells on one hand on the piano...does that count? :;-): And I like moving my hands to the player piano in the hotel lobby pretending to be a piano genius:D

Thanks for the tip, I've heard people mention the pain and that you have to develop callouses (sp). I am a bit worried about this because I have developed a condition where my hands and fingers go numb when I elevate my arms but when I drop them to my side it subsides. I might have to have surgery for it. So I think for now I'll look into getting my 'starter' guitar (I'll check on the Washburn, thanks Jones!). Maybe I'll fiddle around with it until the surgery, but at least I won't FEEL anything!! :acoustic:

Ell, hang on a second, the callusses aren't like monkey fingers! THey just mean the tips of your hands gget the slightest bit rougher, but no monkey fingers or anything.

P.S.: Even though, you never expected me to say this, I pray for your conidtion, and I pray for you to go with an "Angel Standing By" during your surgery.

If it's not too late for me to suggest, may I recommend purcahsing vinyl strings to steel lstrings. As a beginner, vinyl strings will hurt your hands less, and promote better reason for playing, because you can actually play for twenty minutes without your fingers wanting to die!

i purchased a new guitar off Ebay that was signed by Jewel (it was not a JKSM, or any of her endorsed guitars) for one hundred dollars. It arrived yesterday, vinyl strings, and easier to play than a regular acoustic. The Ebay store was called Inkredible Autographs. Here is their link:

http://stores.ebay.com/INKREDIBLE-AUTOGRAPHS-ONLINE-SHOPPE

They cater many names and had a few of Jewel's last time I looked. You should keep an eye out before going to a local guitar shop, check these guys out for a few weeks, you might just get paydirt!

If not, at least get one with out steel strings. If you need to defy my advice, go to a local guitar shop and check out some of both. hHave them show you one or two chords to play and try them out. I think you'll thank me later.
