GAIW, the teariest album of Jewel? or maybe.. the happiest? Jewel said she asked quite a few fans what they think of her album and the half said its the sadest album of her and the other half said that its the happiest album.
What do you think? I dont think that GAIW is her teariest album, but also not the happiest!!! The teariest album (melodic) in my opinion is Spirit, than cames POY, GAIW, This Way, and 0304 is the happiest. The lyrics are on all albums serious and top by the way !! (exists the word sadest?? Ive looked in the internet and it stands "teariest")

hmm not sure what the saddest album is but I don't think it's GAIW... I would definately say 0304 is the happiest because of the subject matter of majority of the songs. I wouldn't say Spirit is sad b/c it is really uplifting for me... maybe POY because of how raw it is and some of the songs are pretty sad especially Adrian... I guess my saddest vote goes to POY..

I don't think it's either happy or sad. It is a journey and all journeys, especially life journeys, are frought with ups and downs. This album covers all aspects, Good/Bad/Indifferent.

I think it is the most mature and the most insightful in terms of who Jewel is but I couldn't agree if it was saddest or happiest

Maybe others would say that GAIW is the saddest because of Jewel's last song, "1000 Miles". Her voice seems like crying while she sings it because the song tells us how she misses a dear one and with her journey of all her journeys , she is afraid of the unknown-the mystery of not finding her way back and of being lost. I got a very sad emotion from this song...I told myself, when I heard this song, ohh...Jewel, why would you leave a sad note in your album, then, I get this emotion and I'm sad. I think she succeeded in putting the emotions in her lyrics well.

Then again. I could totally relate to this song, especially lately. Can you say that you've never felt as down as that in your life? Jewel has said it herself that she has been surrounded by people but felt totally alone. Fits in with

"What do I do? I'm a thousand miles away, and I'm lying next to you"

She's lying next to someone but feels 1000 miles away. We've all felt that.

Seeing as this album is a like an autobiography in many ways and represents key points in her life, I see 1000 miles away as one of those vital and poignant songs to represent those down emotions that no other song could represent.

Sadness is something we don't like to see but without it, there would be no life. It is all part of that balance we are constantly reminded of. There is a phrase that the Buddha said "To live is to suffer" and it is for that suffering that we can see the good and appreciate it more.

That is a key point on the album. That is Jewel's lowest point and luckily, there aren't many songs on there with a negative emotion. Most are positive.

WOW I have chills for 2 reasons. 1- I just this morning found a live version of 1000 Miles Away and listened to it before I came back to this thread... and 2- Kiera you just completely connected me with that song like I hadn't connected with it yet before. I think that is a constant struggle in my life... being surrounded by people but feeling completely alone.
But back to this live version I just found.. first off she is explaining how her stationwagon was having all these mechanical problems and she was trying to explain it with her spirituality.. like her brakes were going bad so she thought maybe she was moving too fast in life or something like that. It was a great story better when she said it.. and so that made the line about her car being run down and beat up make more sense.... but anyway that version of the song is now my favorite. I was never much too fond of the album version for the whininess of when she says "GOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDD" it just sounds too whiney for me, but I love how she performs on the live version I have. It's awesome.
But thanks Kiera for going deeper into this song. I can appreciate it that much more now :)

A person who is in touch with his spirit, feels homelessness sometimes.... And Im happy that Jewel has that touch tone within herself. I would say, that people who are like that will always find their way home.

Absolutely, I much prefer the live versions too. There is one particular version I have that sounds like a studio recording. It is actually a live version but you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium that it was so breathtaking how she sung it. I think it is one of the best examples of how Jewel's emotions are so potent in it that they grip you every time. I love it.

Totally agree with you!

I think it's the happiest. Jewel sounds happy and I think understanding the world we live in and trying to live it the best way possible, loving the best way possible, makes it a happy album. Not a gleeful album, with sappy songs, but a true happy album, when you know you've done your best and you know you still have a long way to go.

I remember hearing 1000 miles away for the first time at my first Jewel concert and I cried. Omg tears were down my face. I'll never forget that.

I think the GAIW album is sort of sad. I think overall Jewel has realized, just like in the song GAIW, that there is no Wonderland, no yellow brick road. You keep waiting for the dream world to show up, but it never will. I think this album reflects this realization.

While it is sad, it is also liberating to know the truth. So the GAIW album is Jewel's truth.

But with truth, comes strength. Jewel is the strongest she's ever been. She's made it this far, and she's still going. I think this reflects the true essence of Jewel...I think it's her most honest album to date.

That is my favorite part, lol! That really is a great song!

Now we all know Spirt is the saddest. I think its sad to say somethings sad but the album's sad and that makes me sad :(

I love Spirit! Maybe my favorite. Nothing cheers me up more effectively than that album :)

As for GAIW, I can't really get myself to get into it. Most of the songs on it I've been listening to the live versions forever and they all sound so polished.... I feel like Jewel has a totally different vibe on stage compared to in the studio. Not to say that there aren't some good album versions of some songs...

I'm pretty excited for the country album.. I hope she doesn't wait years and years!!

I love spirit as well and it is my fav. album. I don't see the sadness... It's inspirational and uplifting for me. Sitdogboy what is so sad about it? Maybe the song Fat Boy is the only song I could see being sad....
I don't really think any of Jewel's albums are "SAD", they are all just realistic and truthful..

I like to use the word "emotional"....that's a good description.

Jewel always say the word authentic when it comes to her writing. That's is why I'm drawn to her like magnet. because of her braveness and honesty to her journey and experiences in this life. With all her popularity and fame, she still remain grounded, which is very rare- she really live up to her name..a jewel indeed!

As DreamsLast just said, emotional.

Just the music itself, not the lyrics is sad. Its kind of like a lesbian suicide pajama party.

Well I can't help but apply Jewel's theory to my own life... it's funny I just heard her story about the cars & spirituality and all yesterday and then this morning when I was leaving work on the way home my rear-view mirror fell off.... and my car is an 86 so it doesn't have the new kind of mirror that sticks to the glass, it is mounted to the ceiling... and it fell off and scared the hell out of me... and right after it did I couldn't help but think maybe this is a sign for me to stop looking in my past so much and move on... hmmm maybe? Coincidence? the fact that I just heard Jewel's story yesterday and then today this happens??? I think it's a sign. :)

I said before and I'll say it again.

Signs are everywhere...you just need to open your mind and your eyes to see them!

Spend just one day with an open mind and try to find them. You'll be amazed how signs drive your life without you even knowing.

That's a prime example, Gary. I'm glad you saw it for what it is.

I dont meant that a sad album is not a good album! but i really think from the melodie, spirit is very melancholic and i love it because of that! I love all her albums, poy has also realy melancholic melodies, this way and gaiw are more "happier" than her first albums (ok we are all agree that 0304 is the happiest one=), i think her sadest songs are my favorites because i feel so emotional when i hear it, like grey matter, fat boy, violet eyes... but i like her "happy" songs too dont understand me wrong. look at break me.. it is also melancholic, but from the melodie not so sad like enter from the east i think... :)

The album for me is all about overcoming hurdles and/or setbacks, learning from them and then finding peace with yourself and your life and being able to surround yourself with people that you love. Particularily Good Day...thats been my theme song for about the past 6 months or so. Life has just not been that happy for me lately but that song reminded me that it is gonna be alright and that I am ok. We all are.

I remember working as a customer service representative for esurance and I would hear this song and start bawling on my way to work. I hated that job and I was so depressed. But everything turned out ok.
