Joy: A Holiday Christmas Collection;
Jewel;
Atlantic
The folk-pop singer Jewel possesses two public personae: There's the edgy, coffeehouse crooner Jewel who sings teen-centric pop tunes, and then there's the doting daugther Jewel who does embarrassing things such as yodeling with her mother on national televisions.
Jewel's first Christmas album, Joy: A Holiday Collection, is one part cool Jewel, 12 parts geek. As for the cool quotient, well, "Face Of Love" is a smart, catchy pop tune in the spirit of "You Were Meant For Me" and "Who Will Save Your Soul?" What's more, "Face of Love" is a shrewd addition to the record because it doesn't sound much like a Christmas song. Yes there's a spiritual message to the tune , and Jewel sings about experiencing the "grace of God, the face of love." But make no mistake about it: This song is designed for Top 40 airplay and heavy rotation on MTV long after the holiday season passes. Aside from this track, however, Jewel plays this holiday album all too straight. Her cooing, somewhat baby-voiced takes on "Joy to the World," "Silent Night" and "Winter Wonderland" are fine, but they're also unremarkable. Jewel gamely attemps a couple of hard-to-sing Yuletide classics, including "O Holy Night" and "Ave Maria," and does OK. She has the pipes to hit all of the high notes, but not the training or texture to deliver those spiraling falsettos with the necessary authority.

boooo that review made me mad, I hate when people always rip up this album. But then again people always rip up any artist for doing Christmas albums. I love this album, I don't care what they say and I love her singing w/ Nedra and I love her yodelling. And she pulls off Ave Maria better than any I've ever heard. Boo to the guy who wrote this review. I will admit though the one song I could live without is the Hands Christmas Version....

The first time I heard Christmas "Hands" I wasn't so sure either, but it kinda grew on me!! Now it's one of my favs on the album. I can't believe the reviewer knocked 'Ave Maria'.....her voice is so angelic in that song! I don't know where some of these critics are coming from sometimes.

my favorite track is the Medley, partly because of Life Uncommon, but a lot of the reason is because I love how gospel choir-ish it sounds. Plus I love the song Go Tell It on the Mountain :acoustic:

Amazon.com Review: (http://www.amazon.com/Joy-Holiday-Collection-Jewel/dp/B00000K53Y#moreAboutThisProduct) Jewel - Joy: A Holiday Collection
Jewel has concocted an intriguing and at times beautifully inspired holiday album, playing it straight with a big orchestra and backing voices for the first half of the record with standards such as "Joy to the World," "Winter Wonderland," "Silent Night," as well as a lovely rendition of "Ave Maria." Things finally get sparkling in the last half where Jewel does a low-key, kid version of "Rudolph" and sings her own compositions. Her moving "Face of Love" and "Hands" are certain to become holiday standards, capable of being sung in a country, pop, gospel, or R&B vein and deserving of an audience as wide as the nation itself. The record's centerpiece, however, seems to be a six-minute-plus medley that mixes "Go Tell It on the Mountain" with the recent hit "From a Distance" and her own "Life Uncommon." Nonetheless, her stunning adaptation of "Gloria" inspired, in part, by Bach's B-Minor Mass, two tracks later is as powerful and lovely a Christmas vocal performance as you will find anywhere. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, Joy is destined to become a holiday classic. --Martin Keller
