Ok if you don't already know I am an HUGE HUGE Aimee Mann fan and her new Christmas cd just came out (yeah a little early I know but oh well) anyway amongst a lot of christmas regulars she did an all new song titled "Calling on Mary" and I need some help figuring these lyrics out and I know everyone here is always great about digging into the Jewel lyrics so hopefully someone can help me out. I basically get the point of the song, what I don't get is the Mary thing.... obviously my initial thoughts go to Mary, mother of Jesus... but I'm not really gettinghow she is using Mary's name and lines like "she offered sight to the blind". well here's the lyrics, please tell me what u think:

Calling on Mary
____________________________

I heard the sidewalk Santa say:
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Salvation's coming cheap today
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas

I searched the skyline for a star
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
And baby I wondered where you are
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas

'Cause comfort's not possible when
You look past the joy to the end

Calling on Mary is voluntary
Unless you're alone like me
If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree

When I was young I couldn't see
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
All that my true love gave to me
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas

She offered sight to the blind
But I'm not the miracle kind

Calling on Mary is voluntary
Unless you're alone like me
If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree

And to all the lost souls down below:
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
What's one more drifter in the snow?
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree
If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree

I really like the lyrics to the song, they have a melancholy type feel that I like alot.
As for the Mary reference, well I guess that is open to interpretation, but sometimes people who havent actually read the Bible could probably think Mary was/is capable of such things.
That's just my thought.

It has been thought that Mary also had healing abilities. Perhaps Aimee believes this and wished to express it in this song.

Andrea, all of Aimee's music has meloncholy all over it ha ha but the Christmas album is great, it's very 1940's style... she's brilliant

btw thanks for your input both of you... Kiera that makes sense. Is there a certain denomination or something that believes Mary had healing powers?

It's some theologians that have thought this that I am aware of. I am not aware of any specific religion though, just those that study the bible, scholars and such.
I remember watching a series of documentaries on tv last year that scrutinised the bible. It was brought about by all the DaVinci code stuff but I distinctly remember them discussing Mary supposedly having these abilities from when Jesus was a young boy. It was not refered to as being widely known at the time and they did use text in the bible as forms of proof.

What those extracts were...I definitely can't remember. Which is unfortunate.

hmmm I'll have to look into this, I wish I could see some of those documentaries, I'll bet they are very informative
