It's amazing how so many people buy "fad" animals then keep them only a short time. I have always felt that obtaining pets should not be the decision of children. They always have such good intentions, but they're kids and by definition they lack the maturity to devote the time needed. Whenver an animal themed Disney movie like 101 dalmations gets released they have to tell people how they should not go out and buy these pets. People do it anyway and they end up giving them up after a short time. It's sad really.
I remember a show on the radio where they were talking about a woman who bought a pet tropical bird while she was in college. She still loves the bird, but nobody told her when she got it that these birds are very possesive or that these birds can live to be over 30 years old. In the mean time she married and has three small children. The bird is jealous of the time she spends with her kids and actually tries to hurt the small children. She lives in fear that the bird will attack the baby in the crib. They say that these birds birds see their owners as their "mates" and any other person is like a rival to be dealt with. She says she loves the bird too much to give it away. In the mean time it's caused marital problems with her spouse, and her children live in danger.

I see you have taken your husbands name. I still haven't decided yet.
Great article. Couldn't have thought of anyone more suited to being a spokesperson for bunnies. It is great to make kids more aware. I hate it when people get any pets for gifts unless all aspects and responsibilies are guaranteed to be covered.
Congrats on the local public awareness Lissa!

Yes, I decided to take his last name. ^_^ It's a lot cooler than my old last name. B)
MrCC: The article was mine. A reporter came to my house and interviewed me back February. ;)

I used to have a bunny, it was the best pet I've ever had except for my dogs. I have a question and I think Lissa should know the answer, I was at a pet store and I saw a rabbit the size of a small dog, it had to way about 20 pounds. What kind is that? And do you think it would make a good apartment pet?
Is there anyway we can see the cover??!

Oh yeah, and Kudos on speaking out about the Easter Bunny pets. Nothing upsets me more than when people don't take care of their pets. :bunnyjump:

20 pounds? That's hard to say. It could be a sort of giant. I'm really not an expert at breeds. In fact, I don't think to highly of rabbit breeders. If it was that big, then I'm thinking it was probably either a californian or a giant. I'm not sure. How big is your apartment? Do you have dogs right now? If so, it's probably not a good idea to get a bunny.
Unfortunately, the newspaper only prints the article online and not the picture. It's a shame because the picture is priceless.

that's okay, i went to the pet store to visit them, and they are a giant breed but there's also a giant smell that goes along with them. *shudders*
Can't you scan the cover?

Giants are adorable. I want one.
This is the best that I could do.
