I can share this now
"hello from texas!
well, i have a few days home alone at the ranch and it feels good! ty is at a bull riding in north carolina, and i am enjoying the stillness of being home alone. it is so pretty here. so different from alaska, but beautiful in a more restrained kind of way. alaska has the kind of extreme beauty that makes you want to bust at the seams. the mountains and glaciers and rivers and great depth of field seems to defy gravity. it is a strange almost volatile beauty that defies you in some way, daring you to look and look more. it is a kind of beauty that takes strength to endure. the extreme hours of daylight. the extreme daylight. the harsh winters and cold summers- all to reap the reward of that stunning scenery.....
here in texas the fields are luscious and green and the pecan groves give shade to deer and armadillo. the river bottoms are guarded on all sides by sentinel oak trees and the hills give the eyes a sense of soothing relief as they break up the static horizon with gentle slopes that climb and bend, but not too much.
ty built a cedar bunk house for the cowboys to stay in during branding season, with a great porch that overlooks all 2,000 acres. this is where i sit to write when i am alone. it is where i sit now with my lap top as i write to you all.
so, fall is upon us and come november i will start to tour a little more. i have been touring with my band, which has been fun. i start the show acoustic and bring the band out after about 40 minutes, i love having a band. it makes the road less lonely, as we get to travel and laugh the miles away. and on stage i enjoy having a band because it helps me illustrate the versatility of my writing to be able to go from a solo song like "1000 miles away", to a band song like "love me just leave me alone". it makes me proud to hear all the songs and the genres they cover, from country to rock to folk.
but come november i will be strictly solo, and this is fun for different reasons. i like to have no set list or rules to follow. i like to feel the audience and let you guys request songs and visit with you. it keeps me from getting bored.
oh, i’m gonna shoot a low-fi, low budget super 8 video of the song “stephenville, tx”. i’m directing it along with kurt markus and 3 guys who have a company called the nova project. it will be pretty simple, but i like that song, and figured i’d release the video on the internet, and who knows, maybe cmt will pick it up and maybe even some renegade country stations...
well, i guess that’s all for now....hope everyone is well, and i will see you on the road! jewel

I'M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!! A video for Stephenville, TX!!!!!! A move to country, just as we all were thinking she would. Awesome!

Very cool! Hmmm... A Stephenville low-fi release, huh? Not to sound pessimist, but I doubt country stations would play this song because of the lyrics IMO. Jewel's first try at country radio is a song telling her story? If Jewel were a staple at the format, I'd probably say radio would eat it up, but as a 1st single I think radio will not relate much to it. But anyway, it seems it's just a step into this direction more than a true 1st country single.
Anyway, this all makes me think we'll see no more big releases after Good Day. Only One Too will probably just be a club release really. Well, let's see what comes along... It would be truly great if Stephenville caught on!

What lyrics specifically do you think won't work on country radio??? I think the song might do well at country, being a country fan myself for many years. A nice video filmed on the ranch would make a nice introduction for her into the country realm too. This is one of my favorite songs on GAIW!!
fabiojj

It's just because I think it's weird to release a 1st single ever to a radio format that says "I'm 31 years old, that ain't the end but sure ain't where I began". But well, who knows, it could become a big hit!

you know CMT used to play 'Down So Long' so technically this wouldnt be the first country pick-up song from Jewel.
I think it's awesome how she makes her own super 8 music videos, I wish she would hire me to film and direct some, I of coarse would do it for free, well.... no, for a song. :)
I do think fabiojj has a point about some of the lyrics in Stephenville being kind of ackward for her to step into the country spot-light... I actually think country fans would like Good Day maybe if the video was a little more country-styled and they actually played it on country radio and CMT... country fans I think like high-high's and low-low's for some reason... ...but then again so do I. -not saying I'm not a country fan b/c I am, I'm just not hardcore country. :acoustic:

I think it is a brilliant Idea. I don't think Good Day would of fit in with country radio. Then again it could of so you never really know.
Let's hope Country radio plays it.

And i got shocked when i read that "STEPHENVILLE " thing... i've never though that would be released as a single or a low -fi video. !!!!
I think the song is very very personal... but that's cool anyway, i like the song. I think that is a step for a "country level":omg:

Stephenville is one of my favorite songs but it will not go country. Besides Jewel, I am a country fan and the country fans will not embrass Jewel. She tried doing a duet with Merle Haggard back in 1999 or 2000 and even sang with Merle on the most important country award show for the year and it went no where. I feel Merle pulled Jewel into the duet to try and jump start his career again but it just didn't work. If she could have gotten one of the big country male stars like Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw or countless others she may have had a slim chance but Stephenville will not get her there. I know a lot of you won't agree and I HOPE I AM WRONG, and I will be more than willing to eat crow if it takes off on the radio but I don't see it happening. Why is she trying to go country, because she has fallen out of grace with the pop fans, so what. She has always claimed she doesn't care about record sales she just wants to con't to record what she wants and if it doesn't sale no big deal. Evidently it does matter to her more than she admits other wise she wouldn't be going country. Now lets hope a month from now everyone can say I am wrong about this country stuff, I would love to be wrong.

I believe the Merle thing was *never* intended to be a hit. They did not release That's The Way Love Goes to radio, but it still got some airplay. They didn't make a video for it. Anyway, it was never an official single, so you can't say it didn't work.
But I do think Jewel will be embraced by many country lovers. I was researching about Nashville Star and other things, and it seems country fans are willing to give her a try rather than bashing her immediately like many others do. Her duet with Merle was very well received among critics and fans and Jewel does have a country lifestyle, much more than many country stars. So I think she can pull it off much better than she pulled pop-diva off.
And I just hate when people limit others. I'm a filmmaker and if I ever have a big hit with a drama then I go on and make a comedy, am I selling out? Why can't I try all the things I want to and feel I can do? People need to open their minds and expand their possibilities. That's the only way you'll grow as person and as an artist. I'm positive that Jewel grew much more by doing 0304 rather than if she'd done POY2. Goodbye Alice could NEVER be done if she didn't go throw 0304 and release all the beats she had in her mind.
Edited to include the *never* :)

Yes that's true she can, but I think if country fans now can relate to her through another country star, it would make the transition easier... I know it happens a lot in hip-hop and R&B and stuff.... the BEP's used Justin Timberlake to get through the door did they not? Not saying Jewel needs that but it would help I think.

~~ Ok I need to add that I love the version of 'Silver Wings' that she did a duet w/ Merle. And I also happen to LOVE Someday Soon that she sings with Garth Brooks, I am definately ready to hear some country from her, it will be really nice. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think it would be expected of her to do a duet with one of the male country stars, I think she should do like a powerful duet with one of the female stars that are popular now, like Sara Evans or ... I know Christie would want me to say Faith Hill :acoustic:

Has anyone heard a song that Jewel wrote and performed called "I Don't Want To Be Loved By Anybody But You"??? It's a long title, and probably not the real title but it's the chorus that stands out.
THIS is TRULY a country song!! She has a little 'wail' in her voice (borrowed from her yodeling I'm sure) that I haven't heard from her before that is just amazing and really country-sounding....you can feel the pain in her voice. The song is great and I think it would be wonderful on a country album. In the recording I have she says "I could do country songs all night!!!" I personally can't wait to hear a country album from her.

Here's the lyrics I jotted down if anyone's interested. I couldn't find lyrics for this song anywhere on the net....so I took to my iPod and attempted to write them down. There's a line or two I couldn't quite get (if somebody knows them, please correct me)....
'Don't Want To Be Loved By Anybody But You'
-as performed by Jewel-
Oh the night drove on and on
Now that you're gone
And that you're far away
My thoughts seem to stray
But I sit alone instead
And know that you're not there
Even though you're not mine
Forever I'll pine
You may call me foolish
*Oh I try and you know it'll be true*(somewhat inaudible)
But I don't wanna be loved
By anybody but you.
Don't wanna be loved
By anybody but you.
Oh just the other day
I saw you walk by
Hearts, they don't stray
I thought I might die
You may call me foolish
*Oh I try and you'll know it'll be true*
But I don't wanna be loved
By anybody but you
Don't wanna be loved
By anybody but you.

Why would she pick the worst song on the album to make a little video for? She needs to release Words get in the way or Only one too as a video/single, not just to clubs. I think Words Get in the way would do great!
I could see her as a country artist, though I cant imagine liking that material as much. She needs to do some of that Serve The Ego style! Mix some rock in her music!

I completely disagree with you...
You should to be more sensitive to the fact that you can make people upset when you say what you think is Jewel's "worst song"...What may be the 'worst song' to you could, in fact, be someone else's favorite song. Jewel can perform many styles of music. As a Jewel fan yourself, you should know this and take that into consideration when you post things like this. Honestly, it comes off as bashing. Thanks...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Had he been singing the songs praises, there probably wouldn't be an issue. We need to accept that we aren't going to agree with one another on every song.
Stephenville happens to be one of my all time favourite Jewel songs. I think it is extremely honest and cheerful and makes no apologies for how she has reached this point in her life. I just love it.
I'm looking forward to the video and really hope CMT embraces it. It is such a huge channel in the US, that I think it will bring really positive attention to Jewel's music.

Ok this thread is getting a little heated, it's becoming POP JEWEL vs COUNTRY JEWEL or something... we all need to just chill out. Ok some of us may hate a song like "Doin' Fine" and others may hate "Stephenville, TX" while some may hate "Jupiter".... it's all personal preference... who cares? Let's just be civil. Besides, Jewel never said she was trying to release Stephenville as a country hit single... she's simply making a low budget video for it just as she did for GAIW.. it seems to me the video, like GAIW, is going to be something she is just sort of doing to do... for the fans. I doubt CMT will pick it up. Did any channels even pick up GAIW? I know it is on the Target dvd and on Yahoo and Youtube and all, but was it really picked up? This is just something she is doing to do, so let's just enjoy it :)

While we may not agree on every song and yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, we still don't need to tell someone else that a song they happen to like is the 'worst'. I just think we should be a little more civil when expressing our opinions, especially when we all understand that Jewel performs all kinds of music. I like both 'pop' Jewel and I like 'country' Jewel, in fact I like all of Jewel's music and that's why I'm here. This isn't about just 'Stephenville, TX', I'm saying this in context to all of Jewel's songs in general. Jewel is very open and performs many different styles of music, I don't know how any person who is a Jewel fan can not understand that fact and respect all of her music accordingly.

WOW! I was just thinking that the other day, I was listening to American Pie by Don McLean (I have been listening to that a lot lately fo some reason, I guess I feel l ike the music is dying) Anyways I was thinking man I wish Jewel would do a cover of this... of coarse it would seem copied a little now since Madonna just did it a few years ago.... but Jewel would do it better :)
Jewel singing 60's and 70's folk songs would be awesome... maybe she'll do that when she gets older, like Dolly Parton just did
and Chris - on a country album I don't know what old songs she would record for it, I could HOPE HOPE HOPE she would do "I'm Fading" but it's not really a country style song, so I'm sure that's out... possibly Everything Reminds Me of You.. but then she would need a partner and Joe Firstman isn't really country...
HEY! MAYBE she'll have Fragile Heart version #4 on there!! hA! well maybe she could do a track with some yodelling on it, that would rock.

Oh I think there have been enough American Pie covers and I don't think any of them are any good. I think the original is best and I think it would be tragic if Jewel did a cover.
Maybe some Neil Young, James Taylor, Carole King or even Bob Dylan covers would be cool.
But I have to agree, Everything Reminds Me of You (which I simply adore) could easily be adapted to country and even though Joe Firstman isn't at all country, I still think he could do that one song. I love his voice. It's very powerful.

As a country music fan, I think this video was played on CMT purely because Ty Murray is in it.....and possibly that the scenery, like the farmhouse are country-ish. But the song itself isn't country at all...
As for ST, I think country radio would embrace it and welcome Jewel to the country realm!! No question about that. I hope she goes for it.
